Two men participating in that march — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and UAW President Walter Reuther — were dedicated to breaking the color lines and fighting for equality in wages, opportunities, housing, healthcare and fair societal treatment.
Because of socioeconomic and environmental factors — many due to continued disparity in opportunities — when COVID-19 struck this country it hit people of color especially hard.
The task force will act in an advisory capacity to the Governor and study the causes of racial disparities in the impact of COVID-19 and recommend actions to immediately address such disparities and the historical and systemic inequities that underlie them.
When we look at the many tragic incidents over the past decades, most recently Mr. Floyd’s horrific death, I can only think that we as a nation failed this young man, as we have failed so many others.
BY VANESSA GONYE THE Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Women Affairs has said the government lacks commitment in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and relies on third parties for knowledge on the matter. This was revealed in a report by the committee on the 2021 national budget, which was presented recently in the National Assembly by Bacillia Majaya (MDC Alliance). Majaya said although Treasury supported most of the bids for GBV programmes, the unallocated bit amounting to $15 million could have gone a long way in supporting such programmes. “In its response to GBV, the government has had to rely on statistics from partners about GBV due to lack of own support services in the form of one-stop centres,” Majaya said. “The need for institutional support services for GBV can never be overstated. Treasury needs to consider a budget towards the construction of one-stop centres starting with Chipinge and Matabeleland North. An allocation of $15 million will close the existing resource gap for one-stop centres.” Majaya said in areas hit by national disasters such as Cyclone Idai, there were no plans to cater for GBV survivors. She said more women failed to access GBV services while others needed direct support from the government. Embattled St Ann’s Bay Mayor Michael Belnavis is a director of a private company that captured government land and constructed a building in a daring disregard of the country’s laws which the corporation he leads is expected to enforce, a Sunday Gleaner probe has unearthed.
Amid insistent Sunday Gleaner queries last week and a refusal from Belnavis and the parish authorities to answer questions, news filtered in on Friday that the unfinished structure, which stood up to Thursday evening, was gone by Friday morning.
The Sunday Gleaner investigation has also uncovered that when whispers started growing louder about the construction, the firm, City Mall Management, rushed to submit a letter requesting a “no objection” from the St Ann Municipal Corporation, which is chaired by Belnavis, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor for the Ocho Rios division.
A Sunday Gleaner team visited the park on June 18, where the unfinished structure was seen on the property, which adjoins the Towne Centre Plaza, a 10-year-old commercial complex owned by Mayor Belnavis.
Meanwhile, Belnavis and other officials of the St Ann Municipal Corporation were last week grilled by Integrity Commission investigators, The Sunday Gleaner understands.

HEALTH Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said now is the time for workers in the retail sector to step forward, roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated.
Deyalsingh made this statement on Tuesday after touring the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) in San Fernando, where food and beverage workers were being vaccinated.
Having reopened the manufacturing, construction and food sectors already, Deyalsingh said, \"We would like to open the retail sector.\"
He said various business organisations are compiling lists of retail workers in their various jurisdictions and sending them to the ministry, so they can get appointments to be vaccinated at one of the 11 mass vaccination sites or one of the two drive-through sites.
He explained, \"Members of the public should not be coming to the mass vaccination sites. These sites are being used to vaccinate major groups like food and beverage, construction and so on.\" People who are not members of any of these groups should make appointments at any of the 109 health centres in the country.
He said small, medium and large health centres can vaccinate 50, 75 and 100 people daily. \"Across the health sector they can comfortably do 7,000 a day, which is three mass vaccination sites.\"
Deyalsingh said about 1,500 people a day could be vaccinated at a mass vaccination site like SAPA.
He hoped similar numbers would be done at drive-through sites at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva and in Wallerfield, which will both be fully operational on Wednesday. At the former, which is being run by Proman, Deyalsingh said a pilot run on Monday saw 500 people vaccinated in four hours.
He also said the objective of the accelerated mass covid19 vaccination was to vaccinate 600,000 people by the end of September and inch ever closer to achieve herd immunity in Trinidad and Tobago, with 980,000 people fully vaccinated against covid19.
\"What we are doing now is ramping up significantly our vaccination programme. We now have in the country enough vaccines to vaccinate 400,000 people. That is 40 per cent of the adult population.\"
Deyalsingh was optimistic that about 200,000 people will be vaccinated by next weekend.
With herd immunity being roughly 70 per cent of the population, Deyalsingh reminded reporters that TT's 1.4 million population includes children.
\"Right now, we don't have vaccines registered in TT for the under-18s, so that knocks off 400,000 people.\"
Excluding this number, Deyalsingh said, \"So it means to achieve herd immunity, 980,000 people, which is close to 100 per cent of your adult population.\"
He said this is why \"we are making vaccines available to every adult and there will be more coming.\"
Any Pfizer vaccines that Government obtains from the United States will be dedicated only to children between 12 and 18, that is, secondary school students.
Against this background, Deyalsingh said adults should take the covid19 vaccines available to them now and not wait for the Pfizer vaccine.

According to a report by the Daily Mail yesterday, the Chinese Super League could be set for an exodus of its biggest names. Several big names from across the world including former Chelsea star, Oscar have in recent years been heading to China for greener pastures. The report further said that salaries for domestic players would be capped at £572 000 a year, while foreign players would earn a maximum of £2,7 million a year. With spending limits having also been imposed for the second and third tier leagues it also affects Mushekwi who is now playing for China League One side Zhejiang Greentown. While the new regulation is a huge blow especially for the likes of Oscar, who is currently reported to be earning £18,87m a year at Shanghai SIPG, it will have profound effects on players like Mushekwi who has also played for the top division in that country turning out Dalian Yifang. The former Caps United striker, who has also played in South Africa and Sweden, is reported to be one of the best paid players in the second tier. The towering striker recently bought a state-of-the-art 45-seater luxury coach believed to be worth US$120 000 for his former team Caps United. The new regulation will certainly hit his pocket, but he will remain one of the best paid Zimbabweans.
