In May, Burundi held a presidential election which was won by Evariste Ndayishimiye, candidate of the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy - Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) party.

Ndayishimiye was hurriedly sworn in after the untimely death of president Pierre Nkurunziza in June.

Rights violations continue

The Council encouraged donor countries which had suspended aid to Burundi to continue dialogue towards resumption of development assistance.

A report by a UN watchdog in September said human rights violations were still being committed in Burundi, including sexual violence and murder.

The country was plunged into a crisis in April 2015 when Ndayishimiye’s predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run for a controversial third term, which he ultimately won in July 2015.

His candidature, which was opposed by the opposition and civil society groups, resulted in a wave of protests, violence and even a failed coup in May 2015.

Hundreds of people were killed and over 300,000 fled to neighboring countries.

Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza helped ensure Thursday that the state will no longer invest in funds which own properties flouting Illinois’ Prevailing Wage Act.

Comptroller Mendoza, who sits on the Executive Committee of the Illinois State Board of Investments, learned earlier this year that the Westin Hotel in Rosemont (which is owned by an investment fund managed by Clarion Partners) underwent a major rehab without paying prevailing wage.

This new language added to ISBI’s rules Thursday specifically outlines that when ISBI funds are used to purchase real estate in Illinois, the managers of those investments must comply with a prevailing wage scale for ISBI-owned properties within Illinois.

The relevant rule now reads: “All investment managers, property managers, contractors, and their subcontractors shall observe, where applicable, all local, state (including Illinois’ prevailing wage scale for ISBI-owned properties within the State of Illinois) and national laws, but not limited to, those pertaining to insurance, withholding taxes, minimum wage, labor relations, health and occupational safety.”

“I’m pleased to hear of the Board’s action today and we appreciate Comptroller Mendoza following through on protections of the Prevailing Wage Act to better ensure public funds, as well as public investments made by the ISBI Board, are made with the hard-working men and women at the forefront of their decisions,” said James P. Connolly, business manager for the Chicago Laborers’ District Council.

According to Buzzfeed, Kizer’s bond was paid by the combined efforts of the Chrystul Kizer Defense Committee, the Chicago Community Bond Fund, the Milwaukee Freedom Fund, and Survived Punished.

In 2018, Kizer met Volar through Backpage and now an offline site that offered sexual services and was shut down that same year due to child trafficking.

DENVER (AP) — The lawyer for the family of Black man who died after being stopped by suburban Denver police last year because he was “being suspicious,” said Friday she and Elijah McClain’s relatives have been conducting their own investigation after an official inquiry cleared three white police officers

Mari Newman told The Associated Press she is suspicious of government investigations of cases of alleged police misconduct.

To subdue McClain, officers used a chokehold that cuts off blood to the brain — a tactic recently banned in several places in the wake of George Floyd’s death last month in Minneapolis.

The attorney general’s office declined to comment on Newman’s decision to pursue an independent investigation.

While the appointment of the attorney general isn’t “business as usual,” Newman said, it’s an acknowledgement of the special circumstances surrounding McClain’s death.

“A true, thorough, independent investigation should not be contingent on a case that garners the public outcry from three million signatures on a petition and international media attention,” Newman said, referring to a change.org petition online petition demanding justice for McClain.

The construction of stadia for domestic football powerhouses Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers in Blantyre is expected to start this Thursday June 11 2020 soon after President Peter Mutharika presides over the groundbreaking ceremony, government has said.

President Mutharika promised to build the stadia's for the two giants last year and Treasury allocated K1.6 billion (K800 million) each in the 2019/20 National Budget.

The President will tour both sites--near Moneymen along Chikwawa Road for Bullets and Kanjedza Forest near Blantyre Teachers College for the Nomads.

Both Bullets and Wanderers officials have commended President Mutharika for fulfilling his promise and that they were pleased with the state-of-the art designs of their home grounds.

The People'sTeam chief administration officer Albert Chigoga said the country has reached reached a stage where \" all doubters realise the fulfillment of the project\"

The number of MDC Alliance MPs defying opposition leader Nelson Chamisa's directive to boycott all parliamentary business continues to increase with 15 party legislators attending Tuesday's sitting.

Stung by a recent expulsion of four senior MDC Alliance officials from Parliament, Chamisa last month ordered all MPs not to attend any parliamentary business.

The expulsions of Charlton Hwende, Thabitha Khumalo, Prosper Mutseyami, and Lilian Timveous followed a letter by reinstated MDC-T secretary general, Douglas Mwonzora to Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda informing him the four had ceased to be MDC-T MPs.

Since Parliament resumed sitting a few weeks ago, only senators Mwonzora, Morgen Komichi, Elias Mudzuri, Morgan Femai, Sunningdale MP Winnie Kanguni, David Tekeshe Makoni Central MP and Glen View South MP Vincent Tsvangirai have been attending Parliament.

Meanwhile, Mashakada told NewZimbabwe.com that the MPs were not defying Chamisa by attending Parliament as they were coming to Parliament to raise issues of hunger faced by many people in constituencies they served.

The Security Council on Friday adopted resolutions to renew the mandates of peacekeeping or political missions in Somalia, Iraq and Sudan's Darfur, and to extend sanctions against South Sudan.

Resolution 2520 authorizes African Union member states to maintain, till Feb. 28, 2021, the current level of 19,626 uniformed personnel, including a minimum of 1,040 police personnel, for the African Union Mission in Somalia, to support security preparations for elections due at the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021, and to conduct tasks in line with an updated Somali-led transition plan and the handover of security to Somali security forces.

Resolution 2522 decides to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq till May 31, 2021.

Resolution 2523 decides that the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) shall maintain its current troop and police ceilings till June 3, 2020, and that during this period UNAMID shall maintain all team sites for mandate implementation.

Monday Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced at a press conference two new investments in the neighborhoods of Auburn Gresham and North Lawndale to address health care deserts.

Last year, Mayor Lightfoot announced INVEST South/West, an unprecedented neighborhood improvement investment initiative designed to revitalize key corridors on the South and West Sides of Chicago.

INVEST South/West neighborhood revitalization projects initially include:

Auburn Gresham (the priority corridor is 79th and Ashland, including the strip of 79th Street running from Paulina east to the planned Metra station.)

Humboldt Park (the City is focusing on two priority corridors: North Avenue from Kostner to Kedzie and Chicago Avenue from Pulaski to Kedzie.)

South Chicago (the priority corridor is Commercial Avenue from 85th to 92nd streets, as well as adjacent blocks on 92nd.)

Up to this point in the interview, former Vice President Biden spoke about his campaign, institutional racism and the challenges facing the black community.

The interview showed that Biden must engage on the issues that matter to black voters, and demonstrated the importance of the black community to the Democratic Party and Biden the presidential candidate.

Efforts to lobby Biden to choose a black woman as his running mate, and the insistence he not select a white centrist in the mold of Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar (reportedly also being vetted) reflect a desire among many black voters to demand more from those in leadership and power in exchange for their support.

Biden’s latest incident isn’t his first, and reminds me of former President Bill Clinton, who during the 2016 campaign was campaigning for his wife Hillary in Philadelphia and found himself in a heated exchange with Black Lives Matter activists over his — and incidentally, Biden’s — 1994 crime bill.

Biden, like Clinton, presents black voters with a conflicting picture; he served under the first black president in a White House — one with a strong commitment to civil rights.

Rwandan chili is set to be auctioned online in China after local coffee performed well in campaigns targeting consumers on China's e-commerce platforms

Chili is among the Rwandan products being exported to China under the electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP).

An example of the events is a recent one that was held last week, where about 1.5 tonnes of roasted coffee beans were sold within a minute on Thursday during an online live streaming event aimed at promoting Rwandan coffee in the Asian country.

Earlier this year, in a similar event held in Hangzhou City, up to 2,000 packets of Rwandan coffee were sold in about 10 minutes

Organised by the Alibaba Group, the online events have been aiming to promote Rwandan coffee which is available on the Chinese e-commerce market.

In an interview with The New Times, James Kimonyo Rwanda's Ambassador to China hinted that they are looking at making an event for chili,

\"We are looking at so many things to do with Rwanda and we are happy that coffee has become a signature export crop,\" he said, adding; \"In fact I should have mentioned that at some point we will do another event on Rwanda chili, it is becoming very popular in Tmall.\"

Last year, Rwandan young agribusiness entrepreneur, Dieudonné Twahirwa, landed a deal to supply 50,000 tonnes of dry chilli worth $100 million (about Rwf90 billion) every year to China, a move expected to significantly boost Rwanda's agricultural exports.

The International Criminal Court suspended its investigation into the war crimes perpetrated in Darfur in December 2014, saying the UN Security Council had failed to support the inquiry. Given this councils lack of foresight on what should happen in Darfur, I am left with no choice but to hibernate investigative activities in Darfur as I shift resources to other urgent cases said ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.

President Bashir was re-elected to another five-year term as president in April 2015, winning nearly 94% of the vote. The opposition boycotted the election. Voter turnout was low, at 46%. He has been in power since 1989 and is under indictment by the ICC on charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity for the atrocities committed in Darfur.
