“I did that for about three years, and because my job there was to monitor metal detectors and capture students in the cafeteria when they were late to first-period class, and because I was seeming more like a correctional officer than an educator, I decided to organize parents, teachers and students and write a proposal to open up a new district community public school in the North Bronx.
The people of the 16th Congressional District need more than status quo representation — the time for courageous progressive action is now and that is what Jamaal Bowman will bring to the Bronx.”

Healthcare workers at the island’s smaller, less equipped hospitals seem to be hit hardest by a reduction of ‘sessions’ and overtime due to the restructuring of patient care caused by COVID-19.
Healthcare workers at the Type B Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital in Westmoreland were among the latest to feel the financial distress, after a letter from the hospital’s administration last Thursday advised that overtime work would be cut.
In the letter to divisional heads, a copy of which was obtained by The Sunday Gleaner, it was advised that the hospital had undergone a budget cut and thus a reduction in sessions was necessary.
Yesterday, Carmen Johnson, president of the Nurses Association of Jamaica, and Dr Elon Thompson, president of the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association, said they were both aware of disquiet over the overtime cuts at some hospitals.
Johnson explained, however, that sessions and overtime are based on needs, and some smaller hospitals, like Savanna-la-Mar General and Percy Junor Hospital in Mandeville, may have less need for nurses on overtime than a larger one such as the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH).
Following the firing of multiple “Vanderpump Rules” stars for racism, NeNe Leakes appears to be co-signing fans who are calling for the firing of Andy Cohen as well.
In response to the firings, Leakes took to Instagram, stating that while the firings were a great start, Bravo still has quite a bit of work to do.
I absolutely support Bravo’s decision, I think it was the right decision,” Cohen said Wendy on his SiriusXM show, Radio Andy.
“And I want to remind people because I’ve been getting so many tweets and messages and whatever about “Vanderpump Rules“ and about “Southern Charm” and other shows.
Cohen went on to say that he has touched base with “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss about how Bravo can move forward.
Mariah Huq, the creator and executive producer of “Married to Medicine,” is addressing rumors that claim she was fired from her hit reality show.
In April, Mariah checked her mailbox and was surprised to see that her contract for the upcoming season was nowhere to be found.
While a few people assumed that she was let go from the Bravo franchise, Mariah revealed in an exclusive telephone interview with Atlanta Black Star that the speculation was nothing more than that.
“I’m the first African-American woman to create a franchise at Bravo.
Mariah, the wife to emergency medicine physician Dr. Aydin Huq, shared that her life experiences inspired her to create the show.
When 49-year-old Marjorie Pearson went into surgery three weeks ago at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), it was not lost on her and the medical team that the high-risk brain procedure could go horribly wrong.
Dr Dwaine Cooke, consultant neurosurgeon at KPH, and a team of anaesthesiologists, residents and specialist nurses were about to pull off a first-of-its-kind brain surgery in the island’s public health sector.
As they painstakingly conducted the craniotomy – removing part of Pearson’s skull to operate on her brain – the patient talked to and responded well to the team of medics as they removed a tumour during the hours-long procedure, even bursting into song at one point.
“With the surgery considered groundbreaking, a team of four anaesthesiologists, who worked closely with the neurosurgery team, which included myself and my junior staff (residents), four other doctors, and specialist nurses working hand in hand, carried out the surgery,” Cooke told The Sunday Gleaner.
When Cooke was called, after consultations, emergency surgery was recommended and the medics would then start making their assessments to perform the operation, the first in the public sector in the island.

When President Ramaphosa announced in May that the country would be moving to alert level 3 from 1 June, he said government would give consideration to re-opening other sectors of the economy, if the necessary safety precautions were put in place and maintained.
\"Therefore, following discussions with industry representatives on stringent prevention protocols, and after advice from scientists and consultation with Premiers, Cabinet has decided to ease restrictions on certain other economic activities,\" the President said on Wednesday.
President Ramaphosa said many other countries are in the same boat during this global pandemic and are resolving similar dilemmas.
\"We used the time during the lockdown to prepare and enhance our health system and put in place public health measures to minimise infections,\" the President said.
The President said as the country gradually opens up, resuming more activities, the risk of infection inevitably increases.
