Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.

Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.

In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.

Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.

Swollen feet

In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.

Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.

Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.

FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.

WOMEN in Zvishavane have demanded that they should benefit from chrome mining activities happening in their communities. BY SILAS NKALA This was revealed in a recent report on mining by the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (Zela), which stated that mining communities were not benefiting from corporate social responsibility projects by big corporates extracting in their areas. The Zela report also said the partial repeal of the indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act through the Finance 2018 Act had erased all hopes for mining communities to benefit from their natural resources. “The Indigenisation Act provided for the participation of indigenous Zimbabweans in mining activities through share ownership schemes such as the Community Share Ownership Trust (CSOT). In the absence of empowerment laws, communities are left at the mercy of companies through corporate social responsibility (CSR),” the Zela report read. They said for instance, Mapirimira ward in Zvishavane was home to many chrome mining companies that include Asia Ferry and Bhunday, which were causing extensive damage to the environment, yet communities were not benefiting. “Community members in this ward pointed out that chrome mining is causing extensive damage to the road infrastructure and the environment. When the mining companies abandon the pits, they leave them open, and these pose as death traps to both livestock and humans. “The issue of open pits is a common trend that has characterised chrome mining in Zvishavane district. In most cases, the host mining communities feel powerless to demand that these companies rehabilitate the areas where they would have finished chrome extraction,” the report said. The Zela report said when the community members of Mapirimira ward tried to engage Bhunday Chrome Mining Company, the company executives refused to meet the communities saying their firm was broke and, therefore, could not do any CSR activities. “About 80 people, mostly women, turned up at the Asia Ferry chrome pits. The women blocked the road from the chrome pits to the processing plant. “They held placards with messages demanding that the company repairs the tertiary roads in the community, sink boreholes and scoop dams.” Zela said after the demonstration by the women the company executives at Asia Ferry bowed to community demands. The environmental non-governmental organisation said it was imperative for communities to know their environmental, economic, social and cultural rights.

Somalia's President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has appointed Mohamed Hussein Roble as the country's new Prime Minister.

Roble, a newcomer to Somalian politics will have to fill the vacancy left by the former PM Ali Khaire, who was removed by parliament last July, after failing to pave the way for fully democratic elections before early 2021.

\" Members of Parliament were told that Prime Minister Khaire is against the two years of government term extension so they expelled Khaire,  remembers political analyst Dr. Hassan Sheikh Ali. From 2017 to 2021 - in four years, Somalia did not make any political progress, and that is unfortunate .\"

Swedish-trained civil engineer Roble's nomination as Prime Minister comes hours after an agreement was brokered with regional leaders, in which the \"one person, one vote model\" which was promised for the next year's elections has been dropped.

The foreign-backed government had been applauded in the past by the international community for pursuing the one person, one vote elections. However political infighting between the president and the country's regional leaders has lead the government to postpone the application of the UN-backed model until after the 2021 elections.

BY VANESSA GONYE ZIMBABWE has reportedly lost between 30 and 34 tonnes of gold which was smuggled to South Africa last year in a new wave of illicit financial flows (IFFs) that are affecting the country, the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (Zimcodd) has said. In a recent report on IFFs, Zimcodd said the bulk of capital flight currently affecting Zimbabwe was happening in the gold mining sector. The revelations also come at a time suspended Zimbabwe Miners Federation president Henrietta Rushwaya is in custody following her arrest last week at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on charges of attempting to smuggle 6kg of gold to Dubai. Zimcodd said a recent study by the African Forum and Network on Debt and Development estimated that between the period of 2009 and 2013, Zimbabwe also lost US$2,83 billion through IFFs, which translates to an annual average of US$570,75 million. It said this was the number one cause for the country’s loss of money, which has led to underdevelopment. “Of the cumulative outflows, 97,88% of US$6 billion IFFs were in the mining sector. In 2019, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development (Mthuli Ncube) is quoted to have said that Zimbabwe may have lost between 30 tonnes and 34 tonnes of gold to smuggling in the neighbouring South Africa,” Zimcodd said. “During this week, both mainstream and social media platforms were awash with stories of the arrest of Rushwaya at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport while trying to smuggle 6kg of gold to Dubai in contravention of section 182 of the Customs and Excise Act, which sets out penalties for any person found smuggling goods into or outside the country. “The attempt by Rushwaya to smuggle gold with an estimated worth of US$333 000 is only a microcosm of the macrocosm of the huge sums of gold and other precious minerals smuggled out of the country. If the figure is anything to go by, if sold officially, the amount from the gold would go a long way in covering the financial gap existing in the public service delivery sector.” The debt watchdog said government must now consider an upward review of the foreign currency retention threshold in the gold sector to motivate gold producers to sell their gold through the formal market in order to curb gold leakages. “Lack of political will and political interference in the operations of the anti-corruption institutions undermines the effectiveness of institutions and legislation responsible for combating illicit financial flows. There is need for the government to demonstrate political will to arrest and prosecute perpetrators and guarantee the independence of the responsible institutions,” Zimcodd said, adding that government should invest in information communication technologies to curb under declarations of minerals.
