For years, the perception was that the fight for civil rights was that Black people wanted to live where White people lived, and to go where White people could go.
Many Black people who attended segregated schools feel like they received a superior education.
Black principals and assistant principals were forced, in most cases, to become teachers, because the mainstream education culture didn’t view the quality of education or educator in Black schools as the same as in White schools.
White principals and assistant principals were not told to come to Black schools and to live in Black neighborhoods.
While many Black people marched and protested for integration, integration never actually happened.
Given the current nature of the country following the death of George Floyd, many Americans across the country took the streets in protest, to demand justice for Floyd as well as many other lives who have been victimized by police brutality.

In the wake of worldwide efforts to call out systemic racism, Black business organizations are speaking out against the restrictions that AB 5 has placed on African American entrepreneurs in California.
They point out that a disproportionate number of Black independent contractors and businesses have been negatively impacted by AB 5.
The statement signed by Michael Lawson, President of the Los Angeles Urban League, read, “AB 5, the legislation introduced by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez focuses solely on the employee side of the equation and ignored the impact that this legislation has on Black-owned businesses that have suffered through a history of redlining that allowed banks and other financial institutions to legally discriminate against Black-owned businesses, preventing them from gaining access to capital and credit.”
Though there has been no official study of the impacts of AB 5 on Black owned business, the Center for Responsible Lending found that 95% of businesses owned by African Americans and other people of color were unlikely to receive aid from the Paycheck Protection Program because of a lack of commercial banking relationships.
During the June 11 floor hearing, Assemblymember Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) spoke in favor of amending the bill by reading from the CBCC’s letter, stating plainly the effects of AB 5 on Black businesses.

EDITORIAL: SMEs cheaper loans lifeline the way to go

The successful SMEs of today are tomorrow’s large firms.
The credit guarantee scheme is intended to de-risk lending to small and micro enterprises (SMEs), enabling financial institutions to advance loans at interest half the market charges.
As one of the bright spots in the fight against Covid-19, the State has crafted the credit guarantee scheme to boost recovery of SMEs that have had to close or slow down their operations from early March as part of public health measures.
In fact, the State should make use of the opportunity presented by this pandemic to craft permanent solutions to the challenges that SMEs face.
Just before the emergence of Covid-19, the number of formal jobs generated by the economy had fallen to a seven-year low in 2019, implying the country should pay more attention to segments like SMEs.

Norman B. Rice was born in Denver, Colorado. He migrated to Seattle in 1970 to attend college. In 1972 he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications and two years later a master’s degree in public administration both from the University of Washington.
Rice then worked as a television news reporter on Seattle’s KOMO-TV and KIXI radio. Following his media stint, he held a series of administrative positions. Rice served as assistant director of the Seattle Urban League, Executive Assistant and Director of Government Services for the Puget Sound Council of Governments, and Manager of Corporate Contributions and Social Policy at Rainier National Bank.
Norm Rice’s political career began in 1978 when Seattle residents elected him to fill a vacancy on the City Council. He was reelected to the Council in 1979, 1983 and 1987. Rice ran for mayor in 1985 but lost to incumbent Charles Royer, another former journalist. In 1988 he ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Party nomination for the 7th District, losing to former Washington state senator Jim McDermott.
During his 11 years on the council, Rice chaired the Energy, and Finance and Budget, committees, and also served a term as Council President. As a member of the Finance and Budget Committee, he worked for more equitable utility rates by Seattle City Light, the city owned utility, lobbied for the passage of the Women and Minority Business Enterprise Ordinance, and called for Seattle companies to end their investments in apartheid-dominated South Africa. Rice also worked to lower crime in Seattle and supported the use of city funds to help impoverished Seattle residents.
On July 28, 1989, Rice filed his candidacy for mayor of Seattle and three months later on November 7 defeated city attorney Doug Jewett by 99,699 votes to 75,446 to become Seattle’s 49th mayor. He was also the first African American mayor of Seattle. Rice was elected to a second term in 1993.
During his tenure as mayor, Rice streamlined the Seattle Public School system, promoted human
[Seychelles News Agency] Seychelles hasn't been paid some $28 million in taxes it was owed as of 2018, a new report from the Auditor General shows.
Meanwhile, the Government minister said the sector could still return to its pre-COVID-19 growth trajectory of 5,000 to 6,000 jobs per year, with adherence to training, promotion, policy, and health guidelines, as well as if new business can be secured, while also scaling up existing operations.
Vaz also told the House of Representatives that since the full implementation of the revamped Credit Enhancement Facility (CEF), 12 financial institutions — including microfinance entities — have signed on and have committed to support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) with loans backed by over $10 billion in guarantees during the the current fiscal year.
The CEF aims to minimise the risk exposure associated with small business lending and acts as an incentive to financial institutions to increase MSME lending – enabling those with viable projects to get additional collateral support.
The CEF business model was revised from an individual scheme – in which individual guarantees are processed by the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) – to a portfolio scheme in which the processing of guarantees is delegated to each approved financial institution based on an annual portfolio allocation, the minister explained.
He said the DBJ has also increased the volume of micro loans to the sector, totalling up to $2,421 million, and successfully implemented the Jamaica Business Fund, which facilitated $427 million in investments in 18 supply chains, benefiting 308 MSMEs.
