South Africa is one of the hardest-hit countries in Africa with over 740,000 infections.
The country recorded 60 more virus-related deaths on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 20,011.
South Africa on Saturday reported more than 10,000 new coronavirus infections, the highest daily jump on record for the country as it hurtles towards an anticipated spike.
Daily tallies released by the health ministry showed 10,853 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, taking the cumulative tally since March when the virus first arrived in the country to 187,977.
The death toll stands at 3,026 after 74 new fatalities were recorded.
Health authorities have been expecting a surge in cases after the gradual loosening of a strict lockdown that was imposed on March 27.
With the nation’s economy projected to shrink more than seven percent in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic — the worst slump in 90 years — the government is battling to strike a balance between saving lives and the economy.
“What we have been seeking to do is to balance… saving lives of our people and also preserving liveloods, and it’s a delicate balance,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday.

At least 60 people have been killed in a series of attacks on villages by armed gangs.

Last week, Nigeria's armed forces launched a series of bomb raids on camps in the northwest region in its latest attempt to curtail violence in the area.
In an apparent retaliation attack, armed gang members raided five villages in the Sabon Birni district on Monday, killing 18 people.

CITÉ SOLEIL, Haiti (AFP) — On paper, Haiti so far has everything it needs to battle the novel coronavirus crisis — unoccupied hospital beds, medical staff, and supplies.
Many of our citizens are experiencing respiratory symptoms and other tell-tale signs,” said Erneau Mondesir, a doctor who works in impoverished Cité Soleil.
Mondesir works at a hospital in Cité Soleil — located just outside the capital — opened by Doctors without Borders (MSF).
“Today, one thing is clear: There are many people who stayed at home too long and then came to the hospital,” explained Mondesir, the medical director for the MSF project.
“It usually takes a week or two from the time that symptoms first appear for patients to show up at the hospital,” he noted.
Public university lecturers and other workers are headed for a clash with their employers over pay cuts.
Egerton and Kisii universities have announced salary reductions of 30-40 per cent on the grounds that they have not received money from the National Treasury.
University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga and Chairman Muga K’Olale said the organisation would not accept pay cuts.
“The university management board resolved that … staff in grade One to Four receive full net salary while those in grades Five to 19 will get 60 per cent of their net pay and the balance will be settled as soon as funds are available,” Prof Mwonya said.

The number of deaths per day from the coronavirus in the U.S. has fallen in recent weeks to the lowest level since late March, even as states increasingly reopen for business.
Deaths from COVID-19 across the country are down to about 680 a day, compared with around 960 two weeks ago, according to an Associated Press analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
Stay-at-home orders imposed in March, combined with the use of face masks and other social-distancing measures, have been bringing down the daily death toll since mid-April, and the U.S. as a whole is still seeing the positive effects, even though people are starting to work, shop and eat out again.

Nairobi, Mombasa and Busia counties in Kenya have continued to recorded surges in the rate of transmission of the coronavirus Covid-19, the Ministry of Health has said.
“We are still having many truckers at the borders, especially at Busia,” Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi said on Monday during the daily briefing.
There have been long queues of truckers at border town waiting to be tested for Covid-19 before they can proceed to other countries.
This comes as Kenya recorded 59 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases to 4,797.
The Health ministry urged Kenyans to adhere to guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.
South Africa’s Covid-19 infections have surpassed the 100 000 mark after 4 288 new cases were reported on Monday.
The positive cases are now sitting at 101 590, while close to 2 000 people have lost their lives.
Of the new 61 Covid-19 related deaths reported, 39 are from the Western Cape, 18 from the Eastern Cape, three from KwaZulu-Natal and one from Limpopo, bringing the death toll to 1 991.
The Western Cape continues to be the worst-hit province, with over 51% of infections and the highest number of deaths.
The coastal province has 52 554 positive cases, followed by Gauteng with 22 341.
Twenty-six people were killed in an attack on a village in central Mali, officials said Saturday, in the latest violence to hit the West African nation.
Friday's attack targeted a Fulani village named Binedama in the volatile Mopti region, said Aly Barry, an official from Tabital Pulaaku, a Fulani association in Mali.
Central Mali - an ethnic mosaic - has become one of the flashpoints of conflict in the country, with regular jihadist attacks on military targets and occasional intercommunal fighting.
A local government official in Koro, a subdivision of the Mopti region, told AFP that the attack on Binedama occurred on Friday afternoon.
The region has also seen several massacres recently, including a militant attack on rural villages which left 12 people dead in April.
