claimed a number of former African leaders.
Death has usually played a big role in news coverage across the continent. Last year we profiled a number of high profile deaths that shook the continent.
In 2020, the continent witnessed the deaths of jazz icon Manu Dibango and famed football administrator Pape Diouf and the killing of Ethiopia star musician Hachaalu Hundessa.
This article however is zooming in on the death of former African leaders – be they ex- presidents or Prime Ministers.
Here is our list of our team put together for our 2020 end of year review.
Africanews’ 2019 list of notable African leaders who died
February: Daniel Arap Moi of Kenya's second president
Kenya’s former president, Daniel Arap Moi died aged 95 . A statement from the presidency confirmed in February.
Moi, a former schoolteacher was president of Kenya for 24 years, becoming the country’s
longest-serving president, he had been in hospital for over a month at the time of his death.
Despite being called a dictator by critics, Moi enjoyed strong support from a large cross-
section of citizens and was seen as a uniting figure when he took power after founding
President Jomo Kenyatta died in office in 1978.
He turned Kenya into a one-party state for years, but in 1991, Moi yielded to demands for a
multi-party state due to internal pressure and external pressure from the West.
Multi-party elections in 1992 and 1997 were marred by political and ethnic violence that
critics asserted were caused by the state. He left power in 2002 handing over to Mwai Kibaki.
April: Togo mourns ex-PM Edem Kodjo
Togo mourned the passing of its former Prime Minister Edem Kodjo .
The former diplomat died at the age of 82 in the French capital Paris on April 11.
Kodjo spent two stints as Prime Minister, the first period from 1994 to 1996 and again from
2005 to 2006 under former president Gnassingbe Eyadema.
He also held a number of ministerial posts years before.
He served in Eyadéma’s government as Minister of Finance from 1973 to 1976 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1976 to 1978.
He was elected as the Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) at its summit in Khartoum on July 18–22, 1978.
June: Nkurunziza dies
Burundi’s outgoing president at the time Pierre kurunziza died in office just after presidential polls
and when his successor, Evariste Ndayishimiye, was about to be sworn into office.
The official account said he died of respiratory issues even though some accounts especially on social media said it was COVID-19.
Nkurunziza’s years in office ended officially with the fast forwarded swearing in of Ndayishimiye.
The deceased who was in office for 15 years, had been hailed for accepting to step down despite
the opportunity to continue in office. He came into office aged 40 and bowed out at 55 years.

Starting with just ten dancers in 1968, Caracalla realised his dream, despite the social stigmas of the time and the civil war of 1975-1990.
The 80-year-old became a pioneer of dance in the Middle East, taking folk forms like dabke from traditional weddings to the stage.
“I was born into a society that had no links to dance,” he told Euronews. “Pursuing a career in dance was not acceptable, for a man or [a] woman, but I was determined.”
Caracalla trained first in his native Baalbek, before completing his apprenticeship under the watchful eye of legendary choreographer and dancer Martha Graham, in London during the 1960s.
In the years that followed, Caracalla Dance Theatre toured the world, performing in venues from New York’s Kennedy Centre to London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

Abdel-Halim received funding from some leaders in the Middle East region like King Hussein of Jordan, as well as support from governmental bodies like the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage.
In 2008, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, conferred Caracalla with the Order of Independence, in acknowledgment of his contribution to the arts in the Middle East.

Abdel-Halim created a, “unique evolution in Arab dance culture,” by mixing traditional Lebanese dance forms with international methods, so says his daughter, Alissar, who is the company’s choreographer.
“It’s the warmth of the Middle East, the music, the colors, the textures – but then you also have the technique of the West,” she says. “You need that technique. You can’t just take a folkloric step and put it on stage and do a two-hour performance with just a folkloric step. You need to be able to elaborate that dance form.”

Alissar’s sibling, Ivar, is also involved in the business, as company director.
Both are keen to keep their father’s rich storytelling tradition alive whilst embracing modernity.
“[In] 2020, everything’s modern. We have to push into the future,” muses Ivan. “Another could say, ‘No, we have to keep our identity, we have to keep our culture.’ We don’t want to veer too far off our roots.”
The show must go on
Whilst remaining anchored in tradition, the Caracalla company has also been forced to move with the times.
Of late, its most recent challenge has been to adapt to the impact of COVID-19.
The troupe’s last performance, before the pandemic struck, was the legendary love story “Jamil and Bouthayna”, at Al Ula in Saudi Arabia.
To ensure all dancers are ready to return to the stage when the time comes, however,

ENTEBBE - For the last decade, Silus Musasizi has lived on a wetland on the shores of Lake Victoria.
Now, it is the water itself that has driven him from his small house on the edge of Entebbe, a Ugandan town that juts into Africa's largest lake.
The Ugandan government has said people like Musasizi are partly to blame for the floods, and wants them to leave the wetlands for good.
Last year, wetlands covered just 8.4% of Uganda, down from 15.5% in 1994, according to the environment ministry.
Now the rising waters are forcing people out of the wetlands, doing Oloya's work for him.
