Former Malian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita returned to Bamako on Thursday after more than a month in the United Arab Emirates where he was receiving medical attention.
The west African country he ruled until mid August has new leaders. Keita was deposed by the military after weeeks of civilian protests against his rule.
The junta ruled briefly before appointing former defence minister Bah Ndaw transitional president- under pressure from regional bloc ECOWAS.
Keita's supporters said the 75-year old looked to be in a much better shape.
But even with a new president, Mali's problems remain the same.
The country is still beset by a militant insurgency and an economy in crisis, just as under Keita who retains significant influence.
It is not clear if the former president will try to pursue an active role in Mali's politics again.

By Associated Press Undefined STEPANAKERT, Nagorno-Karabakh (AP) — Rocket and artillery barrage hit residential areas in Nagorno-Karabakh on Saturday hours after the United States hosted top diplomats from Armenia and Azerbaijan for talks on settling their decades-long conflict over the region. The heavy shelling forced residents of Stepanakert, the regional capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, into shelters, as emergency teams rushed to extinguish fires. Local officials said the city was struck with Azerbaijan's Smerch long-range multiple rocket systems, a devastating Soviet-designed weapon intended to ravage wide areas with explosives and cluster munitions. Nagorno-Karabakh authorities said other towns in the region were also […]

By ERIC TUCKER Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials said that Russian hackers have targeted the networks of dozens of state and local governments in the United States in recent days, stealing data from at least two servers. The warning, less than two weeks before the election, amplified fears of the potential for tampering with the vote and undermining confidence in the results. The advisory from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security's cybersecurity agency describes an onslaught of recent activity by a Russian state-sponsored hacking group against a broad range of networks, some of which were successfully […]

By JAY REEVES BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama voters once again have the chance to remove the racist language of Jim Crow from the state's constitution, which was approved in 1901 to enshrine white supremacy as state law. Courts have long since struck down legalized segregation, but past attempts to strip the offensive phrases have failed. Even though no organized opposition to the measure has emerged this time, some worry that conservative backlash to the Black Lives Matter movement could quash the proposal, which qualified for the ballot months before the nationwide demonstrations that occurred in the wake of the […]

BY Garikai Mafirakureva THE Zanu PF politburo has barred civil servants from contesting in the party’s district co-ordinating committee (DCC) elections, saying it was illegal for them to stand for political office. The decision, announced after Wednesday’s politburo meeting, came after several civil servants, among them teachers and judicial officers had submitted CVs for consideration as candidates ahead of the party’s internal polls. They had initially been given the greenlight by Zanu PF national commissar Victor Matemadanda in a circular dated September 10, 2020. But Zanu PF acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa said the politburo reversed the decision after noting the illegality. Zanu PF Masvingo provincial spokesperson, Ronald Ndava said: “Initially, there was a waiver which allowed civil servants to participate in the DCC election, but now we stand guided by the decision after noting the illegality. “It is up to the candidate now to decide if he or she wants to continue contesting the election and to relinquish his/her post in the civil service.” Some of the members to be affected by the politburo’s decision include Siyaki Mudungehama, a teacher in the Gudo area who was eyeing the Chiredzi chairmanship, while Norman Sharara, who wanted to deputise him is a schools inspector in Chiredzi. Another affected candidate is Mashoko High School head, Tranos Mbwirire, who was gunning for the post of secretary for business development and liaison in Bikita district. Elsewhere, current Mashonaland West regional director for Primary and Secondary Education, Gabriel Mhuma was reportedly vying for the position of secretary for science and technology in the Makonde DCC election.

By CALVIN WOODWARD and HOPE YEN Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — A more measured President Donald Trump does not necessarily mean a more truthful one. In the final debate of the presidential campaign, he was loose with facts on the crisis of the time — the pandemic — and much else. Trump did, though, exploit confusion sowed by Joe Biden during the primaries, when the Democrat occasionally made his position on energy sound more to the left than it actually is. Trump accurately called out Biden when Biden denied he had ever vowed to ban fracking. That was never Biden's […]
