Amazing Grace: President Obama's Bold and Moving Speech on Race in Charleston

Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.

Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.

In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.

Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.

Swollen feet

In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.

Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.

Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.

FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.

BY ARNOLD FANDISO THE Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum yesterday urged government to take the necessary measures to ensure the safe return of journalist-cum-activist, Itai Dzamara, who was allegedly abducted by suspected State security agents in Glen View, Harare, six year ago and remains missing to this day. In a statement yesterday, the organisation’s deputy chairperson Chester Samba accused police of making no effort to investigate the matter despite a High Court order and pressure from local and international human rights defenders. Dzamara went missing on March 9, 2015. “Despite the police report and persistent widespread calls for investigations into the abduction, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has over the years remained reluctant and uninterested in diligently looking into the matter,” Samba said. “High Court judge Justice David Mangota ordered the police to fully investigate the disappearance of Dzamara. However, no meaningful investigations have taken place, as evidenced by the absence of any comprehensive reports submitted by the authorities.” National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he could not comment on the matter as he was at a workshop. “I cannot comment, I am at a workshop,” Nyathi said. Samba said government should take all necessary measures to guarantee the safe return of Dzamara and also ensure human rights defenders in Zimbabwe were able to carry out legitimate human rights activities without fear of reprisals or restrictions. He said government should ratify, domesticate and fully implement the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance and against Torture. Speaking at the Itai Dzamara virtual commemorative event, Amnesty International director Jessica Pwiti demanded that the authorities should investigate Dzamara’s disappearance. “People do not just disappear into thin air. Someone knows where Itai Dzamara is and we demand that they bring him back,” she said. Blessing Nyamaropa of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said the rights lawyers had written several letters to the police demanding to be apprised on the progress on their investigations. A Florida woman, who said that two black men abducted her son, actually drowned the boy herself, according to ABC News.

Patricia Ripley reportedly told police that two black men abducted her son last week but the police found inconsistencies in her story and discovered she actually killed her son.

A surveillance video shows the mother initially shoving her 9-year-old, autistic son, Alejandro Ripley, into a canal in an attempt to kill him.

Although Alejandro, who suffered from severe autism and could not speak, was killed by his own mother, the public was enraged that his mother filed a bogus report with Miami-Dade Police that two black men kidnapped the boy.

According to a Miami-Dade County police report, Ripley allegedly told police that while she was driving with her son on Thursday evening, she was ambushed by two black men, one armed with a knife, who demanded drugs.

OPPOSITION MDC Alliance vice-presidents, Tendai Biti and Lynnette Karenyi-Kore were arrested yesterday after trying to gain access to the party headquarters wrested by the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T in a Thursday night raid with the assistance of the military and police.

After addressing the media, accusing President Emmerson Mnangagwa of working with MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora and Khupe to destroy the MDC Alliance, Biti and his team started to sing revolutionary songs before police pounced on them.

“At approximately 10pm on June 4, 2020, a truckload of armed soldiers and police officers assisted 20 youths to forcibly gain entry into the MDC Alliance headquarters, Harvest House,” Mahere said.

MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende, who attended the scene on Thursday night to make a police report over the takeover, was advised by the police to talk to the army.

Mwonzora last night denied that his party was being aided by soldiers and the police, saying they only came after Hwende had brought a group of youths.

At the beginning of last week, news of the May 25 Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd dominated headlines as black America came to grips with the latest in a string of video-recorded violence.

Sunday, the wave of violence hit Boston, when protestors leaving a gathering at the State House fanned out into Downtown Crossing, some smashing store windows and throwing rocks and water bottles at police officers.

The demonstrations in Boston and around the U.S. came after Minneapolis police fired officer Derek Chauvin who kneeled on Floyd’s neck, suffocating him, and three officers who stood by and did not intervene in the killing.

That frustration was on display last week when demonstrators forced their way into a Minneapolis police precinct and set the building on fire.

For police officers who have responded to the last six years of demonstrations with the same paramilitary tactics, tear gas, and rubber-coated steel bullets used on protesters in the streets of Hong Kong and in Palestine, the sight of the burning precinct seemed to elicit a more violent response to the anti-police violence demonstrators.

One of the oldest tricks in the anti-Black playbook was unsuccessfully pulled last week in Florida when a mother told police that her autistic son had been kidnapped by two Black men.

Amazingly, no innocent people were rounded up as suspects in this case, but her lie certainly jeopardized the safety of Black men in Miami-Dae County.

After killing her children, she told police that a Black man carjacked her and kidnapped the kids.

Police began hunting for fictional Black men who fit the description Smith gave them.

Georgia police officer Sherry Hall claimed she was shot in the abdomen by a “Black man, 6 feet, 250 pounds, wearing a green shirt and black jogging pants” in 2016.

According to authorities, Jordan got angry that his one-time girlfriend, 37-year-old Shanta Renee Singleton, was leaving him for another man.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg wrote that, “One of the daughters told deputies that she, her three sisters and mother were on the way home from Myrtle Beach when one of the sisters noticed Jordan was following them.

When they arrived at the residence, Singleton and Jordan began to argue, a daughter told deputies.

From panic one of Singleton’s daughters, 12-year-old Tre’vay Stroman, jumped on Jordan’s back to help her mother and he shot her.

Jordan also shot at Singleton’s 18-year-old daughter Shantasia Stroman, but the shot only got her arm.
