[This Day] Abuja -- The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that its commitment to progressives reforms, electoral promises remain unwavering.
Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.
Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.
In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.
Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.
Swollen feet
In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.
Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.
Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

On recoveries, Uganda’s at almost nine in every ten cases (they have no fatalities yet), Ghana’s around three in four, Senegal’s a little over two in three, South Africa’s at fifty percent and Kenya’s slightly above one recovery in three cases, along with Nigeria.
In this seven country subset, Kenya and Nigeria top fatality rates at one in 40, while only Ethiopia (5,000 cases, 78 fatalities) didn’t impose a lockdown, relying on strong social messaging instead.
Tuesday, ODM leader Raila Odinga was non-committal on his party's plan to strike a deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee, but explained that such discussions have not been put on the table.
REFERENDUM
He went on: \"As we move towards 2022, our main agenda is to see the success of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum through cooperation with President Uhuru Kenyatta so as to address the proposed issues and clear the path for a united country and level playing field\".
Mr Odinga said that even though he has not discussed forming a coalition with President Kenyatta's Jubilee, they were enjoying a cordial working relationship through the March 9, 2018 Handshake and BBI.
\"We haven't discussed a post-election deal with Jubilee but are together with them on BBI to bring changes we agreed with Uhuru that our parties already approved,\" Mr Odinga said during a radio talk show on Milele FM yesterday.
The DP's allies, led by his de facto spokesperson in Jubilee Mr Caleb Kositany, have accused President Kenyatta and Mr Odinga of seeking to stop Dr Ruto from ascending to the country's top seat in 2022.

Ethiopia is pushing ahead with plans to sell two new telecommunications licences following delays due to the coronavirus outbreak and postponed elections.
Almost two years after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced a plan to open up the market, the government on Thursday opened a month-long window for potential buyers to submit expressions of interest, with the International Finance Corp as advisor.
Africa’s second most populous country is one of the final frontiers for telecoms investors, and carriers such as Orange, MTN Group and Vodacom Group are among those eyeing the opportunity.
Ethiopia’s initial plans to issue licences by March 2020 were disrupted by the decision to hold elections on 29 August, which the government later postponed indefinitely due to the virus outbreak.
Abiy’s administration wants to offer two new licences and sell part of the state-controlled monopoly, Ethio Telecom, to help liberalise the economy and attract more foreign capital.

With a general downturn in business as the COVID-19 pandemic grips the global economy, KingAlarm boss John Azar is urging business operators to use the slow period to critically analyse their operations and retool to rebound when the recovery begins.
He suggested that business operators take a deeper look at internal processes, product lines and the customer-service experience, as well as their monthly recurring expenditure, emphasising that those who take the time to reflect and adapt are likely to fare better in the crisis.
Noting the crippling nature of the virus, Azar said it was important for the country to strike the right – although delicate – balance between managing the current health crisis and the accompanying economic tsunami.
Azar said that like many businesses, KingAlarm has been affected by the pandemic.
Aside from trying to keep KingAlarm afloat, Azar disclosed that he takes time for self-care to cope with the added stress associated with the pandemic.
East African Community intra trade volumes have reduced to about 40 per cent due to Covid-19 measures as the World Trade Organisation warns of a worldwide drop in merchandise goods.
“Intra trade volumes in the EAC have dropped to between 30 and 40 per cent in the past three months,” said Kenneth Bagamuhunda, EAC Director General, and Customs Trade.
“This can be attributed to the restrictions imposed on the movement of cargo trucks from the ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam to Malaba, Busia, Mutukula, Rusumo and other border points within the community.”
“The Rusumo border from Rwanda to Tanzania was also affected when Rwanda insisted on testing truck drivers for coronavirus thus affecting the smooth flow of goods to Kigali,” said Mr Bagamuhunda.
“Covid-19 has adversely affected EAC intra trade and cross border movement of goods,” said Dr Peter Mathuki, chief executive of East African Business Council.

“We aim to be a community asset, and in order to fulfill that goal, we need to be more than just a basketball team,” Hawks CEO Steve Koonin said.
The partnership comes after several Georgia residents (and lawmakers) took to social media to complain about their chaotic voting experience this month, especially in Fulton County, theGrio previously reported.
