The Eastern Cape's Covid-19 hotspots will be divided into sub-districts to better manage the fight against the pandemic through regional responses in the \"vulnerable\" province, the national Department of Health said on Sunday.
In a media statement on Sunday night, he said after completing a trip to the Western Cape, which has 65% of all national cases, the department was now turning its attention to the Eastern Cape.
\"The Eastern Cape has similar numbers to Gauteng but it has recorded the second highest mortality numbers and its proximity and interconnectedness with the Western Cape makes the province especially vulnerable.

Eastern Cape education MEC Fundile Gade told News24 on Tuesday that the 16 learners escaped last week while the school was in the process of transporting learners to three quarantine sites.
A total of 284 pupils of the school were tested, and 204 people, including staff, were confirmed to be Covid-19 positive, said Gade.
Gade also announced that a total of 15 staff members had died of Covid-19 at Eastern Cape schools.
At the briefing, Mabuyane told journalists that 200 Eastern Cape schools are closed due to Covid-19.

The minister reported a further 69 Covid-19 related deaths on Saturday evening, bringing the death toll to 1 423, which translated to a mortality rate of 2.2%.

Investors who entrusted their money to Breedt approached the Eastern Cape High Court in Port Elizabeth for a relief order after numerous promises by Breedt over the past seven months to have their money paid out were allegedly not kept.
Gordon Kayser of GTA Kayser Attorneys in Pretoria acted on behalf of 300 of the 2 000-plus investors in Breedt's scheme.
After numerous attempts by various investors to convince Breedt, who in January closed his offices in Krugersdorp and then fled to Jeffreys Bay, to pay out their capital failed, an urgent anti-dissipation order was filed against Breedt.
Kayser said an investor who had lost around R7.5 million after investing it with Breedt, and who earlier also applied for an interdict against Breedt, had joined the legal action.
His court order was also granted to have further bank accounts belonging to Breedt and VS frozen.

Treasury is discussing the possibility of an inheritance tax and a so-called solidarity tax in a bid to raise additional finances, said two people who listened to the calls with hundreds of clients of Standard Bank and Absa.
Mboweni’s room to raise levies for individuals and companies is limited, with the ratio of tax revenue to GDP at 26% compared to a global average of 15%, according to World Bank data.
