SCRANTON, United States (AP) — Endurance athlete Corey Cappelloni once ran six days through the Sahara Desert in what's considered the most grueling foot race on Earth.

Cappelloni spent seven days covering the distance from his home in Washington, DC, to the nursing home where 98-year-old Ruth Andres lives in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, arriving June 19 to cheers, flags and purple balloons, her favourite colour.

“Nana, you're a strong person,” Cappelloni said into a cellphone and microphone, as a nurse held up the other end of the line to Andres.

It also aimed to raise awareness about residents and caregivers in such facilities, many of which have been hit hard by the coronavirus, and to honour the lives lost, including Cappelloni's great-uncle Charles Gloman, who died May 11.

“She had some very rough days,” Cappelloni said that day in a video he posted online.

But two teacher unions, the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union in Zimbabwe (Artuz) and the Progressive Teachers Union in Zimbabwe (PTUZ) said their members cannot make it back to work as they do not have transport money and are facing food shortages. In a letter to chairperson of the Public Service Commission Vincent Hungwe, Artuz secretary-general Robson Chere requested an urgent review of teachers’ salaries to their August 2018 benchmark of US$520 or the equivalent at the prevailing interbank rate. “This letter serves to inform you that as Artuz members we are incapacitated to report back for duty and survive this harsh economic environment heightened by COVID-19,” Chere wrote. “We can no longer afford transport to duty stations, to pay basic food stuffs, rentals, water, electricity bills and other essential services now priced in US dollars.” Chere added: “Our paltry salaries in RTGS cannot sustain us for a whole month or even a week. We request an urgent review of our salaries in US dollar or RTGS at the prevailing interbank rate, with monthly reviews from the government. We urge the employer to come up with an urgent solution to avert our situation,” the letter read in part. Teachers started receiving their salaries this week, with some crying foul after funeral insurance fees of $1 000 were added to their cost. Most teachers who earned about $3 800 walked away with about $2 600, about US$31 using the auction rate, after deductions of the insurance fees. The teachers are also yet to receive their US$75 COVID-19 allowance. PTUZ president Takavafira Zhou reiterated that the government has overstretched the patience of teachers who have waited for long to have their working conditions improved. “Admittedly, the government has overstretched teachers’ patience and elasticity that has now reached a breaking point. Only a few days before public schools open, there is no clarity over improvement of salaries and conditions of service,” he said. “What is inherently clear is that teachers have all tested positive to poverty and unless there is a concerted effort to address this long standing issue, teachers would be incapacitated to report for work on 28 July 2020.” “Yet sound as this appears, the government has been prevaricating since its flirtation with moribund, obsolete and archaic Apex Council in Victoria Falls in February 2020.” He added that the Apex Council has blatantly failed to lobby for better salaries of teachers and entirety of public service workers. “Worse still Apex Council’s unprocedural extension of mandate has even expired, but government is still closeted to romance with it for firefighting escapades instead of addressing the plight o

THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) must be given the sole responsibility of registering political parties to avoid name contestations among political actors as witnessed in the opposition MDC. BY VENERANDA LANGA/NQOBANI NDLOVU/BLESSED MHLANGA Electoral watchdog, Zimbabwe Elections Support Network (Zesn) made the suggestion in a draft Electoral Amendment Bill proposal handed over to Parliament yesterday. To ensure independence, Zesn also suggested that Zec should be answerable to Parliament and empowered to postpone elections at polling stations where there are fears of disputed results. Zesn also proposed amendments to the Electoral Act to allow registered voters based outside the country to take part in postal voting alongside those that are unable to attend voting due to employment, security services and other reasons. Zesn chairperson Andrew Makoni said the Bill should be seen as a step towards implementing much-needed electoral reforms to break the cycle of electoral disputes. “We believe this will significantly improve the electoral landscape and remove electoral contestations,” Makoni said during the Zoom platform launch. “It will take us a step further in implementing the much-needed electoral reforms. We need to break the cycle of continuous or cosmetic amendment to the electoral system which at the end of the day does not address challenges to our electoral cycles.” The Bill was submitted to Parliament through the Justice and Legal Parliamentary Committee acting chairperson Joshua Murire who emphasised the need for free and fair elections. “We are fully geared to ensure that this Bill goes through all processes in Parliament, and eventually gets signed by his Excellency … to pave way for well-managed election processes in Zimbabwe. We hope that future elections will be guided accordingly,” Murire said. The Bill speaks to the need to ensure Zec’s independence while also providing for appeal mechanisms, among others, as well as placing control of all electoral-related functions on Zec. “There is no requirement in the (current) legislation in place for registration of political parties and we have seen how those are affecting those parties themselves with litigations all over …,” Makoni said. Zimbabweans are witnessing the implosion of the opposition MDC, fighting over MPs and councillors as well as party name. “The Bill will also introduce a new section 39B which empowers the commission to postpone an election at any polling station if it has reasonably determined that it is not possible to conduct a free and fair election at that polling station. Any postponement should be to a time within the period prescribed for holding elections by section 38(1) of the Constitution,” part of the highlights of the Bill read. On election dispute resolution mechanisms, the Bill proposes the alignment of the “Electoral Act to its new status as a special division of the High Court rather than an independent court.” After receiving the Bill, committee member Innocent Gonese said it was very important for Parliament to ensu

BY FORTUNE MBELE FORMER Highlanders defender Bruce Kangwa, believes that newly-signed striker Prince Dube (pictured) will definitely add value to the Azam.Dube (23) signed a three-year contract with the club on Monday where he joins compatriots Kangwa and Never Tigere. He probably becomes a direct replacement for another Zimbabwean Donald Ngoma, who parted ways with the club in June.Kangwa says Dube just has to remain focused and hit the ground running. 'The way I know Prince, he will add value to the team here. I know he will give us something to smile about. When you are new in a club obviously the expectations will be high but all I can say to him is that football will be the same the way he knows. He just should not put himself under pressure,' Kangwa said. Kangwa warned Dude that he will need to provide the goals that he has been signed to produce if he is to succeed at the club. “There are a lot of things he can expect here and my advice to him is that he should stay focussed and put that ball️ into the nets and the rest will just come his way,” Kangwa said. Kangwa briefly played with Dube at Highlanders before he left for Tanzania. Dube paid tribute to Highlanders.“Bosso family I can’t thank you enough for everything you have done for me in all these past years. Thank you for everything; the love ,support, appreciation, just everything you did for me. Thank you Highlanders. You are such an amazing club and you will always be home. Thank you for the love, support through the bad and good times. Words cannot express my appreciation for the fans,” Dube said on his Twitter handle. Highlanders and Azam on Monday confirmed Dube's new deal.Dube joined the Highlanders' senior team in 2016 after a good season with the club's Division One side Bosso 90 the previous year. He was to move to SuperSport United in July 2017 but failed to impress at the South African club and returned home at the end of 2018 and signed for Highlanders once more, playing only a season last year before his move to Tanzania. Dube is eyeing a move to France where his handlers say he has attracted interest from two clubs for trials but has failed to travel due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Earlier this month, The Weeknd donated half a million dollars to the Black Lives Matter movement and Colin Kaepernick’s legal defense fund and now, the famed singer is upping the ante in the name of COVID-19 relief.

“The Weeknd on Monday announced that he has made a $1 million donation to coronavirus relief, giving $500,000 each to MusiCares and to the front-line hospital workers of Scarborough Health Network, the hospital network in the Ontario city where he was raised,” Variety reports, adding “He also brought back the line of facemasks themed for his XO company, with all of the proceeds from sales of The Weeknd’s XO face masks will be donated to COVID-19 relief, with the artist matching every dollar raised.

According to the announcement, the donation is a leading gift to the health network’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund, which now totals more than $2.7 million.”

“I was raised in Scarborough and felt it was important to give back to the community that raised me during the hard times of this pandemic,” The Weeknd said in a statement, according to the website.

“Massive thanks to the fans for buying the xo masks and doing your part in helping fight Covid,” he wrote.
