Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

“California is radioactive,” said Karen Anderson, founder of the Facebook group “Freelancers Against AB5,” a protest group aiming to repeal a state law classifying most California freelancers as employees in order to guarantee certain job benefits.

“California needs to suspend AB5 during this pandemic,” Anderson said, “so when we crawl out of the wreckage of the stay-at-home order, we can survive without having a stranglehold on entrepreneurship and a boot on the neck of small and medium-sized businesses.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed the bill into law in September, reclassifying large numbers of gig workers as employees rather than independent contractors.

Higbee said even if the bill had been passed to protect the vulnerable, the Uber and Lyft drivers he has spoken to have either not heard of AB5, or, upon learning of it, insist that they don’t want to make less money by being classified as an employee, even if employers are forced by law to provide benefits.

Gonzalez called out Uber’s CEO in March for requesting exemption from federal and state labor laws and accused the rideshare giant of exploiting the pandemic to undercut worker protections.

At the urging of Gen. Sisi, who wields more influence over the country than the interim government, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets on July 26 to show support for the military and to demand that the country confront terrorism. The next day, members of the Muslim Brotherhood staged their own demonstration—a sit-in—in Cairo in support of Morsi, and police opened fire, killing more than 80 people and wounding several hundred. Despite the escalating violence, the Islamists continued the sit-ins and set up protest camps. On August 14 riot police raided the camps. They opened fire and used armored bulldozers, tear gas, snipers, and helicopters to clear the camps. Protesters threw rocks and burned tires in response. More than 500 people were killed, and the government declared a state of emergency. Mohamed ElBaradei resigned as vice president in protest of the militarys action. President Barack Obama canceled joint military exercises between Egypt and the U.S. that were scheduled for September in response to the militarys repressive and heavy-handed tactics. “While we want to sustain our relationship with Egypt, our traditional cooperation cannot continue as usual while civilians are being killed in the streets,” Obama said.

The crackdown and protests dragged on for several days, as both the military and Morsis supporters vowed to continue their fight. Casualties mounted with more than 1,000 fatalities, most of whom were Morsi supporters. On Aug. 18, 36 Islamic militants in police custody were killed while being transported to prison on the outskirts of Cairo, and on Aug. 19 militants killed 24 police officers in the northern Sinai region. Foreign governments urged the military to use restraint, a plea largely ignored. While foreign officials deplored the heavy-handed tactics of the military, they were careful not to imply support for the protesters, recognizing that the interim government was the only hope for stability. Arthur Allen Fletcher is known to many as the father of affirmative action.  In the following account historian David Hamilton Golland describes the career of Fletcher, a Republican civil rights activist during the last half of the 20th Century.

Arthur Allen Fletcher, known to many as the father of affirmative action, was born on December 22, 1924, in Phoenix, Arizona. Little is known of Fletcher’s birth father, but his mother, Edna, soon married Buffalo Soldier Andrew Fletcher, who would eventually adopt Arthur. The family moved from one Army base to another for much of Arthur’s childhood before finally settling in Junction City, Kansas.

Fletcher graduated from Junction City High School in 1943, after leading a protest against the school yearbook which placed the photos of black students in a separate section in the back of the publication.  Fletcher in his senior year organized a boycott of the segregated yearbook and the following year the practice was permanently dropped.

While at Junction City High Fletcher met Mary Harden, a daughter of one of the local black communitys wealthiest families.  Hardens grandparents had owned much of the land that eventually became Fort Riley.  They married in May 1943 just as he graduated.  Within a year their daughter Phyllis was born, followed by Sylvia (1945), Arthur, Jr. (1947), Paul (1948), and Philip (1949).

Fletcher joined the U.S. Army immediately upon graduation from high school and in the Spring of 1944 was sent to England, where he performed in one of many Army bands and played intramural football. In the fall of 1944 he was a military police officer on the “Red Ball Express” supply line in France.  The following spring Fletcher was wounded while serving in Germany in General George Patton’s Third Army.  He recovered and was discharged later that year.

Returning to Kansas after the war, Fletcher enrolled in Washburn University in Topeka on the G.I. Bill.  While at Washburn he was a doorman at the state legislature and a waiter at the Jayhawk Hotel, a

June 19, 2020

Maurice McCreary, Jr. has been named the Texas Health and Human Services Commission’s Chief Operating Officer, effective July 20.

“Maurice’s extensive business development and project management experience in the health care field is a welcome addition to our agency, and we’re excited he will be joining the HHS team,” said HHS Executive Commissioner Phil Wilson.

McCreary most recently served as the interim chief executive officer of Hamad General Hospital, a 660-bed tertiary care facility in Qatar, where he led daily operations of the clinical and non-clinical support services departments and facilities management.

Additionally, McCreary served as lead business subject matter expert for core hospital information systems solutions.

Before joining Sidra Medical and Research Center, McCreary held various roles at the University of Maryland Medical System.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson on Tuesday announced the launch of the Mayor’s Milk Initiative, a partnership with Borden Dairy to distribute thousands of gallons of milk to Dallas residents in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through the Mayor’s Milk Initiative, Borden will deliver the milk to Dallas ISD elementary schools and certain houses of worship.

With the help of Dallas ISD and our local faith leaders, this program will ease the burden on families facing hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mayor Johnson said.

“Dallas is our home, and we are proud to expand our local donation initiatives with the support of the Mayor, the Dallas ISD and other non-profit partners,” said Borden CEO Tony Sarsam.

Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said the Mayor’s Milk Initiative is a welcome addition to the district’s Grab and Go food program, which has provided over 4.5 million meals to students since schools were closed in mid-March.
