S.A.V.E. plaintiffs ask U.S. Supreme Court for voting help in Shelby County
The S.A.V.E. (Shelby Advocates for Valid Elections) nonprofit and a consortium of plaintiffs is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear their federal lawsuit seeking election security reforms in Shelby County.
The plaintiffs are asking the Supreme Court’s justices to hear the case, decide if they have legal standing to sue and send the matter back to the federal district court for a preliminary injunction hearing to “protect the voters in the fall elections.

Along with S.A.V.E., other plaintiffs are State Rep. Joe Towns Jr.; Mike Kernell, former state representative and Shelby County Schools board member; Britney Thornton, a recent city council candidate and voter Ann Scott.

Man charged with driving into crowd of protesters
A man was charged with driving his vehicle into a group of protesters who were blocking a road at Midtown intersection, police said.
William Day, 57, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment and reckless driving, according to Memphis police spokeswoman Lt. Karen Randolph.

A concerned Deborah Agong from Diego Martin stood at the back of a long line stretching from the entrance of the Inland Revenue Office at Government Plaza, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain, to the waterfall in the middle of the courtyard.
She told Newsday reporters on September 12 she was there to pay her property tax, but the line was daunting. Knowing the rate at which government offices operate, she wondered if her lunch hour would be enough to get inside the office and make the payment.
“The line hasn’t been moving,” she said. “I think only one or two people went in since I got here, and I have to go back to work.”
She, like a few others, said it would be easier to pay online, but that option is not yet available.
“I think it is a great inconvenience,” she said. “This is a backward step.”
Another Diego Martin resident, who didn’t want to be named, shared that feeling.
“I don’t line up for many things any more,” the resident said. “I do online transactions with the bank, so online payments for property tax would be a big help, just like how they have the system to do income tax online. That is very quick. I think they could do something like that.”
A Curepe resident who didn’t want to be named said she decided to go Government Plaza because she was in the area for work, but the lines made her turn back.
“I got there about 9.20, but there was no line at the entrance. When I went inside I told them what I was going for, and they directed me to the banking hall. But when I got there, I saw about 20 people in front of me.
“I had to go to work,” she said. “I just took the chance to see if I could get it paid quickly.”
Newsday asked if she would have paid already if she had the option to pay online, and she responded: “Yes. Long time.
“From the minute I got that assessment I would have paid it online.
“I have all my banking set up to have my bills paid online. I go to the bank’s portal, put in the account and pay. That way I can track the payments as well.
“I am not going to T&TEC to pay that bill or another place to pay another bill. I just send it through the bank. I pay tradesmen like that.
“So why can’t I pay my taxes like that as well?”
Property owners have until September 30 to pay property tax.
A notice on the door of one of the BIR offices, seen in August, said the office would not accept Linx payments from September 12, because of the close of the financial year. The Finance Ministry also announced online payments may not be available until next year.

THE Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange Ltd (TTSE) has announced the amendment of a rule (Rule 400 (2) (g), which deals with the Special Market Listing Requirement for Small and Medium Enterprise (SME).
The announcement came in a statement by the TTSE on September 11 which said the amendment became effective on August 22.
The statement said the amendment reflects TTSE's commitment to fostering growth and creating a more accessible environment for SMEs seeking to list on the exchange.
The public float required for SMEs was reduced to 20 per cent of the total issued share capital, down from the previous requirement of 30 per cent.
\"This change is intended to encourage companies to utilise the TTSE SME Market to raise capital while maintaining compliance with necessary regulatory standards.
\"This amendment was carefully considered to balance regulatory compliance and market accessibility, making it easier for SMEs to meet listing requirements while still ensuring investor confidence and market stability.\"
The statement concluded with the TTSE pledging its support to the growth and diversification of local capital markets.
The TTSE also committed to creating opportunities for businesses of all sizes to access public funding.

PRIME Minister Andrew Holness was among Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) officials who paid tribute to former mayor of May Pen Milton Brown, who died peacefully yesterday.
A highly respected politician at the local government level, Brown had been councillor for the Mineral Heights Division since 1998, and mayor of May Pen between 2003 and 2012.
Recently elected Member of Parliament for Clarendon South Eastern, which also includes Mineral Heights, Pearnel Charles Jr, said he felt “great sadness” in confirming Brown's death.
We take comfort in knowing Councillor Brown lived a full life and made impacting contributions to his family, friends, South East Clarendon, and the Jamaica Labour Party,” he said.
