Voters in Seychelles are starting to cast their ballots in the presidential and national assembly elections.
It comes at a crucial time for the nation of 115 islands off East Africa, Voters will decide if President Danny Faure will be elected for the first time after taking over from predecessor James Michel, who resigned.
His People's Party, which has been in power since 1977 also faces an unprecedented challenge
The vote will run across three days across the islands.
Faure is facing two rivals. The main one is Wavel Ramkalawan of the Linyon Democratik Seselwa (Seychelles Democratic Alliance) opposition party, the majority party in parliament after winning 19 of 34 seats in the last election.
He is an Anglican priest and has run for president six times
But the opposition parties have not managed to unite in this election.
The other candidate is Alain St Ange, who was in the opposition before joining the government tourism minister.
He is running for the One Seychelles party which he created a year ago.
The main concern for the voters is the economy, which has slowed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
About 700 people have lost their jobs, according to government figures. The idyllic islands famed for their white beaches are a hub for tourism, particularly with those on their honeymoon.
But the coronavirus pandemic has closed borders, hampering the key tourism industry.
Another key theme of the campaign has been corruption, a largely taboo topic in the tiny country where everyone knows everyone and business and politics are often intertwined.
The Seychelles is classed by Transparency International as being perceived as the least corrupt country in Africa and among the 30 least corrupt in the world.
However it is also a tax paradise housing numerous offshore companies.

THE United Nations says huge volumes of firearms are being trafficked into the Southern African Development Community region with Angola and Botswana being among countries that are most affected by the illegal arms trade. The report, by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), comes at a time Zimbabwean security forces have launched an investigation into an alleged proliferation of illegal firearms in the country. The report, titled Global Study on Firearms Trafficking, was released during the virtual UN General Assembly summit. A total of 12 000 illicit firearms were seized in Angola this year alone, while 1 000 were confiscated in Botswana, making the two countries the worst affected. Angola is also the most affected African country. However, the UNODC warns this might not be a true reflection of the situation because of under-reporting and lack of capacity to intercept the arms in other countries. Apart from the two, no other southern African country appears on a nine-member list featuring prominently countries in the strife-torn East and West African regions. Kenya is the second most affected African country after Angola. “The seized firearms include pistols and sub-machine guns,” the report read. “In Africa, the largest quantities of seized weapons were registered in Angola and Kenya. Aside from the prevalence of shotguns generally, notable proportions of machine guns were seized in Tunisia and of sub-machine guns in Burundi. “In the Central African Republic, aside from miscellaneous weapons such as grenades, artisanal weapons and cannons, the remaining seized weapons were predominantly rifles and sub-machine guns. “However, many countries in Africa appear to have a lower capacity to intercept and report trafficked firearms, which may lead to under-reporting of some types of firearms. “Moreover, the total figures reported by countries include seizures which are not directly connected to trafficking. Based on customs seizures at borders, rifles emerge at par with pistols. This suggests that firearms such as rifles may play a bigger role in global trafficking pat-terns than what is reflected in the currently available data.” The report noted that the majority of weapons were sourced from the United States and were used in violent crimes and conflicts on the continent, while some of the deadly weapons would be intercepted while in transit to other destinations. “Northern America is the principal sub-region of departure for seized firearms, according to the available data. Trafficking by land remains the most common type of cross-border cases, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the total. Interceptions from vessels accounted for only around six percent of all customs cases, but 33% of the total number of firearms seized by customs.” The report said conflict-ridden DRC was a major destination of European-made firearms. “Shotguns were most conspicuous in African countries in addition, a high proportion of shotguns was registered in Greece, driven by a single seizure of 6 404 shotguns intended for the De

BULAWAYO-BASED rising guitarist Shekinah Nathan Ndlovu (SN) has won the hearts of many after exhibiting exceptional prowess and unique sound that has distinguished him from the rest. The self-taught guitarist, also known as Shekinah The Music in the showbiz circles, has worked with a number of artistes among them Vuyo Brown, Mai Mwamuka, Asaph, Sandra Ndebele-Sibindi and Mzoe7. NewsDay (ND) Life & Style reporter Sharon Sibindi caught up with Shekinah The Music, who revealed that his dream is to sign for renowned recording labels such as Sony or Warner. Below are excerpts of the interview. ND: Tell us about yourself and how you ventured into the arts industry? SN: I am a 22-year-old musician who considers himself a down-to-earth, highly imaginative and shy person, but who is always ready to confront any challenge. My music career began at church, singing in a choir and when a friend Paul Maseko introduced me to Band Fusion that is when everything started and I later played for people such a Asaph, Mai Mwamuka and Vuyo Brown. ND: Who is your source of inspiration? SN: Jimmy Dludlu comes first followed by Norman Brown, Kerry 2 Smooth and George Benson. Locally, Samuzik, Hudson Simbarashe and Trust Samende. ND: After working with a number of artistes, how has it shaped your career? SN: Well, they would tell me to be creative and play what I feel is required in a certain song, giving guidelines and tips on what is required by listeners. They helped me to not only grow my talent, but sharpen my skills which makes recording and performing a breeze. They also emphasised that I should be original. ND: Which type of guitar do you play and how did you learn to play it? SN: I play lead on an electric guitar, but I can also play the acoustic and bass. I taught myself most of the instruments I play. ND: What is the favourite project that you have worked on? SN: I have several musical projects which are favourites among them Thula Wazi, Asambeni and Sandra Ndebele’s new album. ND: An artiste you wish to work with? SN: I would like to exhibit my talent with local artistes such as Ammara Brown, Takura and Selmor Mtukudzi. ND: What is your favourite genre? SN: Well, I enjoy playing jazz, RnB, contemporary and house, but I feel I am more at home when it comes to soul music. ND: What projects are you currently involved in? National armed forces opened fire on Nigerian youth in Lagos at an anti-police brutality demonstration on Tuesday — injuring around 50 people and shooting at least 20 dead, as per unconfirmed reports
Amnesty International which has already condemned the use of excessive force by the Nigerian police to subdue protesters, stated there was ``\"credible but disturbing evidence'' of the incident.
\"While we continue to investigate the killings, Amnesty International wishes to remind the authorities that under international law, security forces may only resort to the use of lethal force when strictly unavoidable to protect against the imminent threat of death or serious injury,\" Amnesty tweeted.

The escalation in violence comes two weeks after the #EndSarsNow movement took to the streets across Nigeria, following the circulation of video showing a man being beaten, apparently by police officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, known as SARS.

BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) insists the quality of its potable water is 94% compliant with the benchmarks set by the Standard Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) despite the rise in diarrhoea in the city. BY NQOBANI NDLOVU Several suburbs have recorded diarrhoeal cases at a time residents are subjected to water-rationing following the decommissioning of the city’s three supply dams. Recently, residents complained that they were receiving foul-smelling water, but council blamed it on ageing pipes. A recent report by the council’s water supplies and action committee said quality tests conducted by the local authority showed that they were compliant with SAZ standards. “The percentage chemical quality compliance for potable water at Criterion, Ncema and Cowdray Park treatment plants was at 100% on average for all plants according to Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) prescribed limits for water suitable for human consumption,” the report read. “Overall bacteriological quality of potable water from Cowdray Park, Ncema, Criterion and consumer points was at 94,38% compliance to SAZ standards.” The SAZ is the national standards body for Zimbabwe. Formed in 1957 and incorporated in 1960, the association is a non-profit entity charged with the responsibility of certifying the quality of most non-medical goods. Meanwhile, the same report shows that city's sewage effluent disposal did not meet the Environmental Management Agency (Ema) requirements. “During the month of August 2020, wastewater discharged from municipal sewage treatment plants to the natural environment did not meet the Ema effluent disposal requirements,” the report read. “Constant breakdowns of infrastructure and low inflows at most of the treatment plants continued to compromise the quality of final effluent disposed of in the environment. Removal of organic pollutants and nutrients (phosphate and ammonia) remain a big challenge for the majority of the treatment plants.”
Protests in Sudan have turned deadly after one person was reportedly killed and a dozen others were wounded, according to a group of doctors linked to the movement that led to the downfall of President Omar al-Bashir.
The demonstrations on Wednesday in the cities of Kharthoum and Omdurman are over the country's worsening economic situation. Protesters are also demanding justice for the hundreds killed during the 2019 uprising, which led to Bashir being toppled.
'We demanded freedom, peace and justice'
Eyewitnesses said police fired teargas to disperse the small gatherings of about 100 protesters.
\"There has not yet been any sentencing for the martyrs,\" said one protester.
\"We demanded freedom, peace and justice and neither achieve peace, neither freedom nor justice.\"
Sudan has embarked on a rocky three-year transition since then under a joint civilian-military administration but has struggled with severe economic woes and skyrocketing consumer prices.
High inflation and a shortage of hard currency mean people are finding it difficult to even buy the basics. Long queues outside grocery stores have also become the norm as have power cuts that can last up to six hours.
Authorities have vowed to rebuild the economy and to bring to justice those responsible for killing protesters.
More than 250 people were killed during the anti-Bashir protests and the ensuing unrest, according to doctors linked to the protest movement.
The transitional authorities have been pushing to end the country's isolation and to rebuild its economy.
On Monday, President Donald Trump declared his readiness to remove post-Bashir Sudan from a US blacklist of state sponsors of terrorism, a move Khartoum hailed as a vital step towards securing debt relief and spurring economic recovery.
