THE EDITOR: I am seeing 'food and drink coming out' a lot now. Anyone else notice this? Does Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh see it too?
The reason team sports were shut down in April, after only being open for six weeks, was because Deyalsingh was concerned that 'food and drink coming out.'
The Government wanted to discourage liming after sports, so it bypassed sports and reopened the liming. Bravo! Who is it fooling?
In October we saw restaurants, bars and casinos reopen. Not to mention that all of these places are where 'food and drink come out.'
The individual sport that Prime Minister Rowley enjoys, golf, has cooler limes in car parks, but team sports are still closed. I did not realise that team sports have more 'food and drink coming out' than individual sports like golf.
I saw a function months ago in Chaguaramas for the rifle range, a prize-giving. I was walking by and saw cars, heard music, saw the 'food and drink coming out.'
Don't get me wrong, I am all for fun times and a return to normal, but there cannot be one set of rules for some and another set of rules for everyone else.
Let me move to the youth (the most neglected and forgotten group) whose 'drink' refers to water and soft drinks.
Over-12s who are fully vaccinated since September are still not at school (that's a whole other fight for another letter) but they are:
* At the cinema where 'food and drink come out.'
* At the water park where 'food and drink come out.'
* At the mall where 'food and drink come out.'
Guess where they are not because 'food and drink come out.'
* On a football field.
* On the artificial turf at the Police Barracks.
* At the Woodbrook Youth Facility playing hockey.
* On a field playing cricket.
At Jean Pierre playing basketball or volleyball.
I do feel a bit like a spoilt child carrying on like this, but it's frustrating and heartbreaking having a fully vaccinated child who cannot play team sports. This is time they do not get back. Minister Deyalsingh, if the children promise not to have 'food and drink come out' would they be allowed team sports? I think they could make this sacrifice considering they have made the most sacrifices since the start of the pandemic.
Can we please end this laughable joke of team sports being closed for 19 of the 21 months of this pandemic?
The youth of this country have nothing and the Ministry of Sport is doing nothing to fight for the reopening of sports clubs and school sports.
The Sport Ministry says it's the Ministry of Health. The Health Ministry says it is Rowley who is the one to call the shots on team sports reopening.
Who exactly is holding a torch for the youth of this country, truly fighting for team sports to reopen? The silence is deafening!
It's a shame the people in charge don't realise that sport has a huge role in nation building. We need sports to elevate qualities like discipline, determination and teamwork.

The Ethiopian army has blocked one of the main roads leading to its border with Sudan, preventing Ethiopians fleeing the war in Tigray from reaching the neighboring country, according to refugees who arrived Thursday at the Lugdi border crossing in eastern Sudan.
\"The Ethiopian army has cut the road leading to the Sudanese border at the locality of Humera (20 km from the border) and those seeking to reach Sudan must avoid the main road and pass through the fields without being seen by soldiers,\" Tesfai Burhano, who had just arrived in Lugdi, told AFP.
On Thursday, the border post was empty and no Ethiopian soldiers were visible. An AFP reporter saw about ten refugees crossing the border while he was there.
The number of Ethiopian refugees fleeing to Sudan has dropped significantly over the past week, according to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). On Wednesday, the UN agency counted 718 arrivals, compared to 3,813 on November 21.
Communications are cut in Tigray, making it difficult to verify some claims.
A Sudanese security official confirmed the drop in refugee arrivals to AFP, without giving any explanation.
Aid given to 'liberated areas'
The United Nations on Thursday said Tigray region was experiencing 'critical shortages' of food, fuel, and cash.
But Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office said on Thursday that the federal government had begun distributing food and other relief items in areas controlled by the national army.
“This humanitarian assistance will now be further reinforced with the opening of a humanitarian access route to be managed under the auspices of the Ministry of Peace”, said a statement from Abiy's office.
According to the UNHCR, 42,651 refugees have arrived in Sudan since the start of the deadly conflict in Tigray, 70% of them via Hamdayit, in the Sudanese province of Kassala, the rest via Gadarif.
Battle for Mekelle
Reports said heavy battles raged Thursday for control of Mekelle, capital of Tigray state. Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the region's governing had reportedly mobilized and armed thousands of men.
The Tigray region of northern Ethiopia has been the scene of fierce fighting since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched a military operation there on November 4, accusing leaders of the Tigray People's Liberation Front of seeking to destabilize the federal government and of attacking two Ethiopian military bases in the region, which the Tigrayan authorities deny.

ZIMBABWEANS have expressed mixed feelings on the 2021 national budget presented by Finance minister Mthuli Ncube in Parliament yesterday, saying it should have been configured in United States dollars as the economy has dollarised. It is not good for us to just have big numbers without value. The economy has dollarised.” Miriam Mushonga from Mabvuku added: “The minister (Mthuli) should have presented the budget in US dollars because everything is now being charged in that currency. “Civil servants should be paid in US dollars. Citizens are being paid in Zimdollars, but have to bear the brunt of using hard currency with their earnings chewed by the cross rate.” Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike said the 2021 budget allocation to the health sector was below the level required for the delivery of quality services despite the fact that health has maintained its ranking in the top five ministries in allocation of government funding. “The Health and Child Care ministry got $54,7 billion which is about 13% (of the budget). But has the allocation increased in real terms if compared to other years? “While the government has shown signs of prioritising health, the overall level of public spending is still low relative to need. Health, thus, needs to continue to be prioritised and the share of gross domestic product needs to be maintained,” he said. He, however, noted that the budget allocation for health did not increase in real terms. Rusike urged the government to make health delivery a top priority if it was to save its health institutions from imminent collapse. “The state of health services is directly related to the government’s misplaced priorities. Government is not allocating adequate resources to the health sector,” he said. Rusike hinted on the possibility of the COVID-19 pandemic going out of hand should there be no adjustments to the health sector allocation. Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Education chairperson Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga said she was happy with the budget as her brief was given. “The ministry (Primary and Secondary Education) was given a lot of money. I just hope it is not going to salaries. In the previous budget, all the money went to budget salaries,” she said. Tafadzwa Chireya from Epworth said he was happy that education was given a priority. “You see for yourself that the standards of education have gone down, especially because of COVID-19.
