Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

Development spending in nine months to March increased 17 percent compared to the same period a year earlier, pointing to increased public investments in infrastructure projects.

Controller of Budget (CoB) data shows Sh463.6 billion was channelled into capital projects during the review period, an increase of Sh68.3 billion compared to Sh395.3 billion a year earlier.

“Development expenditure recorded growth in absolute amounts (Sh463.6 billion), compared to Sh395.3 billion recorded in a similar period FY 2019/20 signifying the government’s efforts to focus on development activities,” said CoB Margaret Nyakang’o in the report.

It was followed by Infrastructure, which implements crucial projects such as roads where Sh85 billion was channelled in the review period.

Yet with millions more Americans seeking unemployment aid last week, the U.S. job market remains as bleak as it’s been in decades.

More than 2.4 million laid-off workers filed for jobless benefits last week, the government said Thursday, the ninth straight week of outsize figures since the viral outbreak forced millions of businesses to closer their doors and shrink their workforces.

An additional 1.2 million people sought aid last week under a new federal program for self-employed, contractor and gig workers, who are now eligible for jobless aid for the first time.

Amazon has posted 200,000 jobs in the past six week — 6% of all the jobs posted online — Pollak said, according to her company’s research of all postings.

Digital publishers Quartz and BuzzFeed, magazine giant Conde Nast and the company that owns the business-focused The Economist magazine also announced job cuts last week.

Three months after the U.S. Census launched its 2020 count, the response from Gary’s residents remains far below the state and national average and at the bottom of the list in Lake County, according to a review of the latest response figures.

Statewide, Indiana’s response rate is 66.1 percent, placing it 10th on a list of 52 states, Census count data show.

Gary and East Chicago are among three cities in Lake County whose U.S. Census response is below the state average.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Florida and other states across the Sunbelt are thinning out the deck chairs, turning over the barstools and rushing to line up more hospital beds as they head into the height of the summer season amid a startling surge in confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Over the past few days, states such as Florida, Arizona, Texas and California have reversed course, closing or otherwise clamping down on bars, shutting beaches, rolling back restaurant capacity, putting limits on crowds at pools, or taking other steps to curb a scourge that may be thriving because of such factors as air conditioning and resistance to wearing masks.

Hospitals in the new hot spots are already stretched nearly to the limit and are scrambling to add intensive care unit beds for an expected surge in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks.

Newly confirmed cases in Florida have spiked over the past week, especially in younger people, who may be more likely to survive the virus but can spread it to the Sunshine State’s many vulnerable older residents.

Britain reimposed a lockdown in Leicester, a city of 330,000 that officials said accounted for 10% of all new coronavirus cases in the nation last week.

Then her uncle, Rayshard Brooks, was shot in the back by a white Atlanta police officer after fighting a drunken driving arrest and trying to run away.

Brooks’ killing so soon after the fiery demonstrations and Floyd’s death under the knee of a white Minneapolis officer have cast a harsh spotlight on the cracks in Atlanta’s reputation for racial harmony and Black prosperity.

Touting itself for decades as “the city too busy to hate,” Atlanta has had an unbroken succession of Black mayors since 1973.

After hiring its first Black officers in 1948, the Atlanta Police Department is now 60% Black, higher even than the city’s Black population of 52%.

Five years later, Maynard Jackson was elected Atlanta’s first Black mayor and was credited with affirmative action policies that gave Black-owned companies a greater share of city contracts.

According to chief representative officer of JN Bank in South Florida, Janice McIntosh, Jamaicans in this part of the diaspora are projected to spend an estimated US$4 million (J$581 million) on real estate investments in the near future.

“Pre-COVID, we have had a number of Jamaican applicants who are desirous of holding down real estate in Jamaica, so they have got pre-approval with us to see how much they are qualified for based on credit reports and income information.

McIntosh said confidence in Jamaica has increased due to the island’s ability to keep cases and fatalities relatively low.

Donovan Irving has worked in the United States hospitality industry for upwards of a decade and is one of the Jamaicans who recently returned to Jamaica after being without work in Miami, Florida, after the Trump International Hotel closed its doors due to the pandemic.

Speaking with The Sunday Gleaner while in quarantine at the Bahia Principe Hotel in St Ann, Irving said he has no regrets being home despite the inconveniences being suffered.

The swift firing and arrests of two Atlanta police officers —now facing 15 charges between them ranging from aggravated assault to felony murder—following the tragic death of Rayshard Brooks, has sparked growing tension in police forces in Atlanta and throughout the nation.

Two flyers circulating around the Atlanta Police Department via text revealed that officers are planning a protest for July 4 in response to municipal calls for police reform.

Atlanta police also revealed in a statement that eight officers have resigned from the department this month.

Seven Minneapolis police officers have resigned since May 25 and Minneapolis Police Department officials cited low morale and feelings of abandonment from city leaders as major issues.

Police unions in Los Angeles and New York expressed that drastic cuts to their department funding would be extremely detrimental to overall public safety.
