Emirati henna artist launches natural henna brand & rolls out 'risqué' designs | Africanews

Whilst the art form of henna may be thousands of years old, just like any fashionable trend it has taken many a stylish twist and turn down the years.

The temporary staining of women’s hands and feet, in elaborate, symmetrical and geometric patterns, has deep roots in the Arabian Peninsula, Indian subcontinent and North Africa.

Its appearance is commonplace at celebratory occasions like weddings, Diwali and Eid.

Traditionally, henna plant leaves were powdered and mixed with water, lemon juice and sugar to make a smooth paste, easily applied to the skin.

However, to prolong the art’s appearance beyond a week, some commercial suppliers took to adding potentially harmful ingredients such as paraphenylenediamine, found in hair dye.

Natural beauty

Natural henna advocate and newly established entrepreneur, Azra Khamissa from the UAE, recently launched her own non-toxic home henna kits.

Filling a commercial gap in the market, she incorporates essential oils, eucalyptus and lavender into her henna powder, to nourish and beautify the skin safely.

“Anything you find, that's been on the shelf for a while, is not fresh. There will always be chemicals in there,” she told Rebecca McLaughlin-Eastham. “So, I wanted to provide people with something they can use at home and mix by themselves.”

Design directive

A chiropractor by day, Khamissa’s henna passion project quickly gained a sizeable following on social media, as she showcased her contemporary, often boundary-pushing motifs on platforms like Instagram .

“The most popular design is the one that I call ‘a glove’,” says Khamissa.“And the design was inspired by the anatomy of the body. It goes all the way through the fingers and all the way around the hand.”

“Beyond that, everybody loves moons, especially for Ramadan and Eid,” she adds. “And girls love floral work.”

Blurred lines

Khamissa’s aim is to blur ethnic and cultural lines associated with henna, making it accessible for all.

Her current muse is a British rapper and activist, for whom she has penned a particularly wild design.

“It would have to be for M.I.A,” she says of the recording artist. “I really want to do a full body leopard print [for her] at some point. Although that might be a bit risqué, in my world. But I think it would just be amazing to try and draw it on someone.”

Brand expansion

Khamissa dyes a customer’s hand with her henna design

Khamissa has ambitions to take her brand beyond the Middle East region in the years ahead. Not least to capitalize on the growing global trend for temporary tattoos, an industry worth more than $827 million last year, according to Market Watch.

“I would love for it to be possible for anyone, at any time, to be able to find a quality henna product,” the young entrepreneur says. “Worldwide, I mean, maybe not so much [only] within the Middle East.”

As Khamissa continues to build her temporary henna tattoo empire one inking at a time, only time will tell whether she’s able to leave a permanent mark on the impermanent

Election campaigns in Ivory Cost took a violent turn last weekend with deadly violence in the city of Bongouanou, 200km north of Abidjan.

Two people were killed as two ethnic communities clashed.

While the violence appeared spontaneous, regional bloc ECOWAS is worried. It has dispatched a delegation to the country to try and calm tensions.

Ethnically charged slogans and messages have increased as the west African country prepares for a presidential election on October 31.

Political analyst Sylvain N'Guessan says last weekend's clashes are a sign of more violence to come.

Daniel Maposa THE launch of the Zimbabwean Arts, Culture and Heritage policy by President Emmerson Mnangagwa last year in November in Bulawayo was a momentous occasion for the cultural and creative industries in the country. Never in the history of the country had the highest office in the land presided over arts and culture business. The launch of the policy was a sign of commitment from government to the development of a sector that has always been on the margins of the national development agenda. However, about 11 months down the line there seems to be no indication or any movement towards implementation of the policy. The momentum and excitement seem to be evaporating, with the only hope being that the policy will not be another document that will gather dust on the shelves and computer folders without implementation. A policy document is a dead document until it is implemented. It is just an intention at formulation and launch and becomes a living being when it begins to benefit the targeted beneficiaries. The best way of ensuring that the people benefit from a policy is to implement it. When a policy is launched it is the role of every stakeholder to bring it to life. Government has to play its role and citizens have theirs too. For this to happen, the parent ministry and its attendant parastatals within which the policy resides, in this case the Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation ministry, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe should provide leadership towards the implementation of the policy. There is need to understand at all levels that the launch of the policy was just an appetiser to the main course. Real work should have begun in earnest already. To all intents and purposes, all stakeholders, the artists, funders, corporates and others should have put their hands at work through the leadership of ministry. After the launch of the culture policy it is important that the ministry turns the engine on. The ministry within reasonable time should have ensured that there is massive conscientisation of the sector of what is contained in this policy document. For the sector to have complete buy-in and play its part, it should have an understanding of the document and the direction in which the journey is headed. Some might argue that just months after the launch, the country like the whole world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic leading to the lockdown where business was temporarily halted. However, it is during this pandemic that some sectors found smart ways of working, through digital media platforms. It could be easy and cost effective for the responsible entities to use social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter or radio to publicise excerpts of the policy document. Zoom meetings could be held to host discussions. With smart thinking, smart working could be a cost-effective alternative. For the policy document to have life and meaning to the lives of many struggling creatives, it is important that there is budgetary allocation towards implementation, mo
