Countries in northern Africa have the highest death tolls, led by Egypt (696 deaths from 15 003 cases) and Algeria (575 deaths from 7 728 cases).
South of the Sahara, the highest tolls have been in South Africa (397 deaths out of 20 125 cases) and Nigeria (211 deaths, 7 016 cases).
\"For now, Covid-19 has made a soft landfall in Africa, and the continent has been spared the high numbers of deaths which have devastated other regions of the world,\" said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO's Africa regional director.
WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan told a virtual news conference in Geneva that the low number of deaths was \"really welcome, and it is a credit to the systems and countries that they are picking up cases and are able to treat\".

Despite this fact, a new poll shows many won’t be getting a vaccine once it becomes available.
A new survey conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 49% of Americans say they plan to get a vaccination once one becomes available with another 31% saying they are unsure if they will get vaccinated.
“Older Americans, and those who worry that they or someone in their household could be infected with the virus are more inclined to say they will get a coronavirus vaccine once it becomes available,” researchers said according to NPR.
“Black Americans are more likely than other racial and ethnic groups to say they do not plan to get the vaccine if it becomes available.”
The survey also showed that white Americans were far more likely to get a coronavirus vaccine, outpacing black Americans 56% to 25%.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said in a briefing that 13 coronavirus patients left hospitals in the past 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries in the country to 421.
All the 147 patients who tested positive are Kenyans and the youngest is one-year-old, Mr Kagwe said.

Zelia, a port city east of present day Djibouti in what is now Somalia, was the first settlement in the region. In 1885, shortly after the Partition of Africa, the French signed a treaty with Issa chiefs that enabled Léonce Lagarde, the French representative, to establish a permanent presence in the region. They created the colony of French Somaliland in 1888 and established Djibouti City as the base of operations. Djibouti City became the capital of French Somaliland in 1892.
Djibouti City grew rapidly after Governor Léonce Lagarde signed a treaty with Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia to establish trade with his nation in 1897. (This was one of the scenarios in a recent article on ethical decisions in war movies!)
In real life, Antwone Fisher was a troubled youngster from a rough neighborhood. Put into foster care at an early age, he was physically and sexually abused. When he joined the Navy to avoid being homeless, he was angry, and prone to disciplinary problems. By working with a psychiatrist though, Fisher was able to come to terms with his past, re-connect with his family that gave him away, and come to an understanding of who he is as a man, and what it is he wants in life. This film based on his life story is not a war film, but it is a Navy film, and its also a powerful film about relationships, coming to terms with ones past, and learning to accept that which we cannot change. It was directed by Denzel Washington. (One of my best African-American war movies.)
