SOUTH AFRICA-BASED gospel diva Letwin Chawira last week said it was important for Africa to unite in prayer for God to heal the continent which has been afflicted with many problems.

Speaking after the release of her fifth 12-track album, Prayers and Praises, Chawira told NewsDay Life & Style that unity was critical.

Chawira was excited that Heal our Land and Greater than the World were already performing well on local and regional radio stations.

“I also have reasons to praise God, the song Greater than the World which has just three weeks on Hevoi FM was number one on its previous Top 10 gospel chart.

The gospel diva had planned to launch her album in March and to do music videos but all this was hindered by the pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic has multiplied the socio-economic hardships in our country and magnified the disparities, National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise said as she introduced a virtual public lecture on Africa Day on Monday.

OPINION | Africa Day: A continent united in its battle against Covid-19

\"We observe Africa Day today – and remind ourselves of the value and strength in our joint and collective fight against our shared and common threat to life and livelihoods.

Turning back to South Africa, she said the Budget was the \"most powerful instrument by which government can implement its priorities to correct, adjust and change lives\".

\"We observe Africa Day today in a reflective mood – uncertain of the lives we will continue to lose to this coronavirus, uncertain of socio-economic impact on the morale of our people.

Cyril Ramaphosa: The solutions to Africa’s problems reside within Africa itself

\"We remain firm in our conviction that we will endure as South Africa; as sons, daughters and citizens of Africa, because we have always placed value on human life above economic gain, and on our inherent commitment to collective action.\"

FORMER Information Communication Technology (ICT) minister Supa Mandiwanzira (Nyanga South MP) yesterday claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa was the most abused person on social media while justifying the need to pass the Cyber Security and Data Protection Bill.

Among other issues, the Bill seeks to deal with abuse of social media through spreading of falsehoods, bad pictures and information that impairs the reputation of others, pornographic material, revenge pornography, computer fraud and other crimes related to the use of computers.

“It is a very good Bill in that it will ensure that people are made to account for what they post on social media because a lot of negative and hostile things have been posted about President Mnangagwa without evidence,” Mandiwanzira said.

Makonde MP Kindness Paradza said the Cyber Security and Data Protection Bill must not infringe on the rights of the media given that laws like the Freedom of Information Act have since been abused before to impinge on media freedom.

“The Bill must be clear on how it will deal with whistleblowers who use social media in assisting with information to deal with corruption,” Chidziva said.

There are now more than over 220,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the continent, with a number of African countries imposing a range of prevention and containment measures against the spread of the pandemic.

According to the latest data by the John Hopkins University and Africa Center for Disease Control on COVID-19 in Africa, the breakdown remains fluid as countries confirm cases as and when.

As of May 13, every African country had recorded an infection, the last being Lesotho.

We shall keep updating this list largely sourced from the John Hopkins University tallies, Africa CDC and from official government data.

Kenya’s listed telco Safaricom topped the region as the largest company by market capitalisation and net earnings yet again this year, even as the Covid-19 pandemic hit listed firms, wiping out shareholder earnings and pushing away foreign investors.

A survey on Africa’s top 250 companies by South Africa’s African Business Magazine had 17 East African companies valued at $20.2 billion (3.4 per cent of total market capitalisation of the companies surveyed).

Last year, the list had 21 companies from the region, valued at $26.3 billion; four per cent of total market capitalisation.

Kenya had 11 companies in the top 250 companies on the continent, three less than last year, and with their combined market capitalisation dropping to $16 billion from $21 billion.

According to an analysis by Tom Minney, the chief executive of Mauritius-based consultancy firm African Growth Partners Ltd, capital outflows from Africa’s frontier and emerging markets as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic have crushed market valuations for many of the listed top 250 companies.

MTN South Africa has introduced new prepaid data bundles offering 1GB of data valid for the day of purchase for R29.

The new tariff is part of a range of new time-limited data plans called EverydayGigs.

The plans include an option to pay R149 upfront for a daily allocation of 1GB for seven days — an effective R21/GB per day.

The operator said the new plans are designed with “affordability constraints” in mind.

For high-data prepaid usage, customers can purchase a 30GB monthly bundle for R499 once off and get an allocation of 1GB data per day for 30 days, or R16/day.

Fishcor's finance general manager Paulus Ngalangi defended his decision to transport a South African Covid-19 patient, who is an alleged fugitive, from the border to Windhoek.

Ngalangi is accused of helping the Namibian-born Immanuel David, who also has South African citizenship, to travel from the south to Windhoek.
