However, the spokesman said the corporation is working to do so as quickly as possible once the weather does not affect the work.

The four-year-old girl who was with her father, Nigel Jones – a prison officer –as men shot and killed him paid tribute to him by dancing at his funeral on Tuesday.

Next to the casket, Aniyah danced to the song God Provides by Tamela Mann as relatives and other mourners cheered.

Heavily armed police and prison officers, together with scores of mourners, attended the funeral at the Irwin Park sporting complex in Siparia.

At the start of the funeral, Aniyah recited a Bible verse (Philippians 4:13) saying, \"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.\"

On November 29, the 38-year-old prison officer was shot dead as he stood with her at the Fyzabad taxi stand in Siparia. The two, from Fyzabad, were waiting for a taxi to go home.

Video footage of the drive-by murder was shared on social media.

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, Prisons Commissioner Dennis Pulchan, La Brea MP Stephen Mc Clashie, Prison Officers' Association president Ceron Richards and other officials attended.

Hinds called on God to be with Aniyah.

He said the child saw things, heard things and experienced feelings that no child her age should have seen, heard, or experienced.

\"This society owes that child all that it can give. This is not Lebanon, Syria or Gaza. This is Trinidad and Tobago, where we make provisions for our children.

\"I have children too. I have a family, and only God knows how they feel—the coldness in the presence of that baby.\"

Hinds implied that prisoners were behind Jones's murder. He referred to Jones as an outstanding officer and father.

Without calling names, he accused people of using a social media campaign with the help of their “friends on the outside” to convince the public that what they did was right.

\"We reject that. It (killing) is an attack on democracy, the well-being of the state of TT, and it borders on terrorism.\"

Hinds slammed \"misguided miscreants\" who he said at times chose to do evil instead of good.

He commended prison officers, saying while the public is at home, officers work in prison, constantly dealing with managing prisoners daily.

He called on prison officers never to let their enemies immobilise them with fear.

Pulchan said in the service’s 183 years, officers have seen a new form of deviance of late.

He said Jones, a tower of strength, did his job fearlessly and was respected by all.

\"The service has lost one of its greatest sons.

\"Some members within the prison walls feel they must continue their criminality behind bars. We will not allow that behaviour to continue,\" he said.

\"No one individual can bring this organisation to its knees. I urge officers to not succumb to fear. Fear only one thing – God. Fear God, not man.\"

He also accused people of using social media to bring down the service.

Pulchan said: \"My prison officers daily feed the law offenders. They protect them from themselves. When they are ill, we take them to hospital. Yet that mouth seems to be biting our hands. This is not acceptable. I believe God is the greatest

Year two electrical and computer engineering students at UWI's’ St Augustine campus are not satisfied with the plans for their end-of-semester exams, which will be held in a physical format.

The students, about 80 of them, met with the head of the department, the campus registrar and the dean of the engineering faculty on Wednesday to have their concerns addressed.

However, several told Newsday they were not satisfied, as the meeting did not solve their concerns.

Given the rise in covid19 cases, the students say their safety and that of their families were being put at risk.

Earlier this week, Bridget Ramroop, the representative for the Engineering Society in the Guild of Students, wrote to the head of the examination board as well as other senior officials at UWI on behalf of the year two students.

Students from year one-four also have the same concerns over in-person exams.

In the letter, Ramroop said throughout the semester they were under the impression all exams would be held online, as they had been since the start of the pandemic in TT in March last year.

She said on November 18, students outside TT were told there would courses for which examinations would be done in a physical format.

Ramroop said after raising the issue with the head of the department, students were told the decision was solely dependent on the board of examiners, which was awaiting approval from the Ministry of Health.

She said local students were not contacted and received no formal notice from the university’s administration.

The guild’s representative said on December 5, students received an e-mail saying one of their exams will be held physically on December 15.

Ramroop reminded that university guidelines say all examination announcements must be made two weeks before the date of the exam, so, since they were only told ten days before, “That notice is void, since it does not meet the 14-day requirement.”

She also said there has still been no confirmation of whether exams on two other courses will be held physically, and “We, the student body, would like to be informed of this decision almost immediately, preferably with at least two weeks’ notice...

“This period has caused the student population an enormous degree of stress and during this period of uncertainty we are placed (under) an even higher degree of stress and inconvenience.”

Ramroop said other departments at the university were having online exams and “it is unfair that we should be exposed to the public and risk our lives in light of the rising number of new and active cases, as well as deaths each day.”

In her letter, Ramroop said students were concerned because the country was in its third wave of covid19 and the situation now was even worse than during the semester when they were present on campus for laboratory exercises, which were done safely in small groups.

She also said a major percentage of the country was unvaccinated and far from meeting the requirements of normality, as there are still pandemic restrictions in place.

Are you into sports? Well, if you're a sports fan who's 24 years old or younger, research suggests that you're in the minority among fellow U.S.-based  Gen Z-ers . In a survey  conducted  last year, 53% of  Gen Z  participants said they were sports fans--with 21% self-identifying as \"avid\" followers. While these statistics may not raise many eyebrows at first glance, they're notably the lowest figures of any other age demographic. The same goes for the NFL and NHL, respectively, followed by 59% and 38% of everyday American adults. Among  Gen Z-ers , though, these figures dwindle to 49% and 25%, respectively. TWO political analysts offered different views on whether PNM Tobago Council leader Tracy Davidson-Celestine should resign, after she failed to lead her party to victory in two consecutive Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections.

Davidson-Celestine defeated her predecessor Kelvin Charles in the PNM internal election to assume leadership of the council in January 2020, while the PNM enjoyed a comfortable ten-two majority in the THA over the Progressive Democratic Patriots.

Two elections later, the PNM's seats have dwindled first to six, and now just one. Davidson-Celestine lost her seat. She ran in the electoral district of Signal Hill/Patience Hill.

In an interview with Newsday on Tuesday, analyst Dr Shane Mohammed said he was not surprised by the margin of the PDP victory.

\"It was either going to be very close or it was going to be a landslide, and it turned out to be a landslide.\"

He said Davidson-Celestine's tenure as head of the PNM has \"not been a smooth ride.\"

\"Since she assumed the leadership, there has been nothing but chaos within the Tobago Council of the PNM, which has caused there to be factions and people walking away from the institution. You have to look at that as a serious factor – not only the lack of leadership skills but the type of leadership that she brought to the table, and it was one that was narcissistic.

[caption id=\"attachment_926757\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"538\"] Political analyst Dr Shane Mohammed.[/caption]

\"I would say that she was narcissistic from the onset, because she was more concerned about creating history for herself, in becoming the first female chief secretary, as opposed to building a profile and building a personality and a track record that would have had people gravitate towards her and give her the mandate by voting for her to become the first female chief secretary.

He said instead, she alienated people within her party.

\"She made unnecessary enemies, unnecessary fallouts.\"

Davidson-Celestine was criticised by some after she asked Charles to step down as Chief Secretary when he lost to her in the PNM internal elections.

The PNM screening committee's decision to reject former PNM leadership candidate Dr Denise Tsoiafatt-Angus for the January 25, 2021 polls also created another scandal.

Mohammed said when the post-mortem is done, the buck stops with the leader.

“An organisation is only as good as its leader in this setting. Therefore, given the results, I don’t believe that she is equipped to lead.”

Mohammed believes the losses suffered by prominent PNM members such as Joel Jack, Marslyn Melville-Jack and Ancil Dennis were collateral damage.

He added that the PNM's inability to hammer out a power-sharing arrangement with the PDP after the six-six tie worked against it. He said the PNM has never been about the individual but the strength of the institution.

Asked what the PDP needs to regroup, Mohammed said Davidson-Celestine should not be a candidate in the future.

He added, \"They will regroup, but I don’t believe that the PNM is

Even though the People’s National Movement (PNM) lost the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections on Monday, Laventille West MP Fitzgerald Hinds said the party isn’t fazed

The Elections and Boundaries Commission's (EBC) preliminary results on Tuesday showed the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) won 14 of the 15 electoral districts in the elections.

Hinds was speaking during a media conference on Tuesday at the Police Administration Building in San Fernando.

“We have a track record of 25 straight years in government. That outgoing PNM administration in Tobago was in office for 21 straight years.

“For 78 per cent of the life of Trinidad and Tobago as a nation state, we (the PNM) have been chosen by you the people of TT to be the government.”

Referencing the party’s clean sweep of the then 12 electoral districts in the 2013 THA elections, Hinds said the PNM has victories and losses in elections like any other party.

“The PNM is a longstanding giant in the political industry of TT, the Caribbean and the world. We are 65 years old.

“We’ve been fighting elections from 1956. In our first outing as a PNM, we won 13 out of 24 seats in the then legislative council, which is now called the Parliament.”

Hinds said the party will now reflect on the recent loss, reorganise and determine how to move forward.

“I’ll tell you one thing, it is the PNM that brings stability, growth and development to TT.

“Often times when they veer away and go down the old dirt road, they come back to the safe solid hands of the PNM and that is also a matter to watch at in the not-too-distant future.”

The son of a 68-year-old health officer who was gunned down near his Tacarigua home on Tuesday afternoon says law-abiding citizens are doing all that they can to protect themselves, and called on the authorities to do a better job of protecting the public.

Police said Dharan Manoo was shot dead near his Beccles Street home at around 5.30 pm on Tuesday. A relative heard the gunshots and saw Manoo bleeding in the street.

Police went to the area with a district medical officer, who declared Manoo dead.

Up to Wednesday afternoon investigators did not have a motive for the murder.

Newsday visited and spoke with Manoo's oldest son, Ian Manoo, who said he was also baffled.

Asked what more he felt the public could do to protect themselves from criminals, Manoo said the public were already doing more than what was required of them and called on the police to step up.

He said his father's murder was a reflection of the state of crime.

\"At the end of the day, I am severely bothered by this, and it is an indictment on the condition of this country with crime.

\"I have no idea why this happened. It's Christmas time; I don't know if someone tried to rob him or something. I don't know.

\"I think the average citizen actually does more than they are supposed to do. The onus is on us a little too much now. The State and the authorities need to step up their game and be more vigilant to make people feel safer as well. We are doing our part. The responsibility is on them now to do their part.\"

Manoo said the area, one of the streets north of the Eastern Main Road. did not have a lot of crime.

His father worked as a health officer under the port health department of the Ministry of Health and was assigned to Piarco Airport. His son said Manoo retired a few years ago but remained on contract.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said Manoo enjoyed joking and exercising and remembered seeing him going to the nearby Eddie Hart Savannah to jog.

\"He was a really pleasant person. This is a really quiet place, so the fact that this happened so close to the main road, where there is so much activity on an afternoon, is even more shocking.\"
