TAXPAYERS COULD see a huge windfall of nearly $750 million if Jamaica holds both the local government and general elections together.
The local government vote is due in November this year, while the general election is due next February.
However, with the constitutional allowance of three months post due date in special circumstances, local government elections can be held no later than next February.
Ruling parties have often used local government polls as a test of the political temperature before lining up their ducks for the general election.
There is currently no fixed date for voting in Jamaica, but general elections are constitutionally due every five years, and local government polls every three years.

Saturday night, the Boston Fire Department arrived at Saint Peter Parish Church to see that someone had set fire to the plastic flowers that were in the hands of the Virgin Mary statue, causing the face and upper body of the statue to be burned, according to a news release from the police department.
\"I was shocked. (There's) disappointment, sadness,\" Father John Curran, the church's pastor, told CNN affiliate WCVB. \"The image of Our Lady is so important for us and our faith. It's such a contradiction to her love. Mary would never desecrate anyone, never hurt anyone, only offer them the peace and love of Jesus. I think that's where it really hits us in our hearts.\"

Given the generally perceived poor performances of the governments during this period it is no surprise that the three elections have been the most competitive (one seat majorities/minorities for the winner) in the history of Guyana’s elections.
