SOUTH AFRICA-BASED Zimbabwean Afro fusion singer Philani “Phitso” Mhlanga has combined his voice with sungura musician Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo to denounce girl child abuse in song. The song, titled Dare Pavarume, was produced by Oscar Chamba of KOM Studios in Harare. BY WINSTONE ANTONIO The project comes amid a surge in cases of abuse of girl children during the coronavirus pandemic. The five-and-a-half minute song, which is available on YouTube, Reverberation, Spotify and iTunes, denounces girl child abuse. In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style yesterday, Phitso said art played an important role in educating the masses, hence the use of music to make sure that people appreciate the dangers associated with abusing the girl child. “Every woman is special, she must be respected. All men must protect the girl child. So through this song, we are saying it’s high time men speak out and educate each other to end this evil behaviour by fellow men in society,” he said. “Some of the situations that our sisters and mothers are in today are a result of us men who are causing their suffering. It’s time, the world started to respect women and those who abuse them in different ways should be punished.” Phitso, who frontlines The Legacy Band said he drew inspiration from the late music icons Oliver Mtukudzi and Tongai Moyo. In a bid to advocate for a better society through his craft, Phitso recently released a single titled Manyanya that has political connotations, which challenge and encourage men to provide for their families. Phitso said he had shelved plans to release his forthcoming album, Chigondora to concentrate on single releases in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. “We have decided to put on hold the release of the album Chigondora and concentrate on singles that will be timely in the midst of this global COVID-19 pandemic that has affected almost every sector of life,” he said. Born in the Checheche area of Chipinge, Phitso released his debut gospel album titled NaJesu Tinosvika Chete in 2013. It was followed by Dream Again Zvinoita the following year, which had hit songs MaZimbabwe, Ibva Muroad and Zvinoita. Follow Winstone on Twitter @widzoanto

Rosângela Cristina Oliveira Santos is a track and field sprint athlete who competes internationally for Brazil, specialising in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Born to Brazilian parents in Washington D.C., on December 20, 1990, she contracted pneumonia as a baby and was one year old when her parents took her to live in Brazil. According to Santos’s aunt, Maria das Graças, two of her sisters moved to the United States to become members of a dance company. One sister, Barbara, who became Rosângelas mother, met a Brazilian in the U.S. and decided to remain in the country. After Rosângela was born and became ill, the parents decided to take her to Brazil where she would be cared for by her aunt, Maria. That move allowed Rosângela’s parents to continue working in the United States.
Rosângela Santos was raised by Maria das Graças in the town of Padre Miguel, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. Santos’s first love was samba, a Brazilian musical genre and dance style, with its roots in African religious traditions. However, she very early showed a talent for athletics. At age nine, she demonstrated that talent by running throughout the streets of Padre Miguel for the fun of it.
Santos first represented Brazil at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, competing in the 4x100 meters relay; her team missed out on the bronze medal by 0.10 seconds. She later participated at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, winning the gold medal in the 100 meters event. She also took gold in the 4x100 meters relay with a time of 42.85, breaking the South American record. At the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, Santos ran the anchor leg in the 4x100m final, ranking seventh with a time of 43.10 seconds and setting a new South American record.
Competing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, UK, Santos placed third in the semi-finals, losing to Carmelita Jeter of the United States and Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica. Santos was the first Brazilian woman to achieve a place in the semi-finals of

Avid Support Outside Court
Hundreds of supporters of Ace Magashule, the Secretary-General of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, staged protests on Friday as some even tried to force way into the magistrate's court in Bloemfontein, the capital of the Free State, where Magashule appeared for his hearing over alleged graft revolving around the equivalent of 13.9 million euros in contracts to audit houses with asbestos roofs — awarded under former president Jacob Zuma's corruption-tainted nine-year administration between 2009-2018. His successor Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed to root out corruption in South Africa, which has seen the ANC at the head of national politics since the icon Nelson Mandela came into power in 1994 after the fall of the white supremacist oppressive apartheid regime.
The court appearance follows an arrest warrant issued on Tuesday over Magashule's alleged failures to conduct oversight and report corrupt dealings.
