A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Four new COVID-19 cases have been registered in Uganda.

According to Dr Henry Mwebesa, the director general of health services, the new case brings the total confirmed cases in Uganda to 264.

Dr Mwebesa said in a Wednesday statement that two cases are among truck drivers while the other two are contacts to previously confirmed truck drivers.

Dr Mwebesa said that two Ugandan male truck drivers who arrived from Tanzania via Mutukula are receiving treatment at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.

Uganda currently has 80 admitted COVID-19 cases, according to Dr Mwebesa's statement.

A recent study undertaken by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and Imperial College, London, reported in the Business Green on Friday that shares in firms investing in renewable energy not only “significantly” outperformed fossil fuel stocks in some of the world’s richest countries but also “displayed far more resilience to the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic” since the beginning of 2020.

In what is seen as the likely intensification of an ongoing robust lobby for the strengthening of an already existing case for more investment in the renewable energy sector, the report – “Renewable power investments ‘significantly’ outperform fossil fuels over past decade,” – examined the respective performances of listed companies in the US, UK, France and Germany, that have investments in fossil fuel, comparing those with firms that are active in the renewables sector over the past decade.

It reports in its findings that shares in renewable power not only displayed lower levels of volatility but also offered investors “significantly higher” total returns than fossil fuel stocks; findings which the article in the Business Green – one of the UK’s leading sources of information in The Green Economy  – says amounts to “a compelling investment case for clean energy.”

The number of new COVID-19 cases continue to drop in Black neighborhoods as Chicago moves closer to Phase 4 of Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s plan to reopen the city.

According to Pritzker’s plan for reopening Illinois, for any of the four regions to move to the next phase, the positivity rate must be under a 20 percent positivity rate and increasing no more than 10 percentage points over a 14-day period.

“The trail is one of our city’s most treasured lakefront amenities,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly.

While the trail will open, all other lakefront amenities including outdoor fitness equipment athletic fields and beaches will remain closed while public health officials advise the District on options to open safely.

Chicago’s swimming pools and playgrounds will remain closed while public health officials advise the Chicago Park District on options to open them safely.

Kenyan police have confirmed a police officer is to face charges over the killing of a 13-year-old boy during enforcement of a coronavirus curfew.

Yassin Moyo was shot in late March while standing on his family’s apartment balcony in Nairobi – a tragedy that a police spokesman described as an accident.

But activists have long accused Kenyan police of brutality and unlawful killings, with little to show in the way of action.

Kenya’s Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) says five other police are facing charges over other deaths, injuries, and assaults that pre-date the COVID-19 curfew.

Since its 2012 launch, Kenya’s IPOA has overseen the conviction of just seven officers for unlawful deaths, despite dozens of killings linked to police.

George Floyd, whose death has sparked worldwide massive protests, tested positive for the coronavirus in a new autopsy report released on Thursday.

Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker said Floyd was likely asymptomatic and was not related to his death.

A report released on Monday by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office said Floyd died of “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint and neck compression.”

The Floyd family hired Dr. Michael Baden.

Baden’s autopsy reported Floyd died as a result of compression on his neck and back from the officer, which blocked his blood flow and breathing.

The health ministry on Monday confirmed twenty one new COVID-19 cases bringing the total of cases in Uganda to 248.

According to Dr Henry Mwebesa, the director general of Health Services at the ministry, social media reports that 105 truck drives have tested positive for COVID-19, are false.

He said that the ministry did not release results on Sunday because samples had to be sorted appropriately and divided between Uganda Virus Research Institute and the National Health Laboratory Services by laboratory teams for quick turnaround time.

Dr Mwebesa said that all truck drivers have to undergo COVID-19 testing and receive results before proceeding to Immigration at border points.

Previously, truck drivers were allowed to proceed with their journey after their samples had been taken and when the results turned positive, they would be followed up.
