Personal memories of Little Richard and his connection to Milwaukee
While experiencing great sadness at the news of the passing last week, at 87, of the groundbreaking Little Richard Penniman, I recall my distinct pleasure watching him in person on a number of occasions in Milwaukee during his hey-day in the 1950s and talking at length with him by telephone here in 1991.
Indeed, among the many great, black performers I have known and interviewed from the era of original black rhythm and blues (1948-62)—from the likes of Antoine “Fats” Domino to Ruth Brown—Little Richard was in a class by himself.
In addition to “Long Tall Sally”—my all-time Little Richard favorite—I best loved “Baby Face” and “By the Light of the Silvery Moon.”
During his long career, the 5-feet-10 Little Richard—capitalizing on the names of Little Willie John, Little Anthony and Little Esther—sang the theme song in two movies, The Girl Can’t Help It (1956) and $Dollars (1971).
Now Little Richard Penniman—the architect of rock ‘n’ roll and its most influential and uniquely powerful performer—is gone.

PRIME Minister Andrew Holness was among Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) officials who paid tribute to former mayor of May Pen Milton Brown, who died peacefully yesterday.
A highly respected politician at the local government level, Brown had been councillor for the Mineral Heights Division since 1998, and mayor of May Pen between 2003 and 2012.
Recently elected Member of Parliament for Clarendon South Eastern, which also includes Mineral Heights, Pearnel Charles Jr, said he felt “great sadness” in confirming Brown's death.
We take comfort in knowing Councillor Brown lived a full life and made impacting contributions to his family, friends, South East Clarendon, and the Jamaica Labour Party,” he said.
“We are grateful for the time he gave us and for all the sweat and effort he put into the development of South East Clarendon, the entire parish, the Jamaica Labour Party, and the people of Jamaica.
Abidjan – Torrential rains turned the streets of Ivory Coast's main city Abidjan into rivers on Thursday, flooding homes, flipping cars and killing three people.
The city's firefighters said that two people died in the devastation, but a journalist said he saw the body of a third victim.
The rainy season in the city, which is home to some five million people, began in May and normally lasts until the end of July.
Following those floods, the authorities destroyed the housing in the most vulnerable parts of the city where people had built homes wherever they found the space to do so.

Set in 1964 Chicago, Preach and Cochise are best friends who are both celebrating the final weeks of their senior year with their classmates at Edwin G. Cooley Vocational High School. After a day of sneaking onto city trains and buses without paying and antagonizing animals at the local zoo, the duo binges on alcohol before heading off to a house party that ends abruptly when Cochise gets into a fight with Damon over a girl.
Having trashed the house during the scuffle, Cochise and Preach leave to go for a joyride with their classmates and bad boys, Stone and Robert – an act that will prove to be ill-fated, as the four are arrested at school the next day. Mr. Mason, the boys history teacher, persuades the police to release Preach and Cochise because of their clean record, but Stone and Robert remain imprisoned due to their being repeat offenders.
When Stone and Robert are released from jail a few days later, the vengeful pair immediately hunt for both Preach and Cochise. Together, they find Cochise on a side street, corner him, and beat him straight to a bloody pulp, leaving him for dead.
Having been notified of the attack on Cochise, Preach frantically searches the streets and finds his best friend’s lifeless body lying face down under an overpass.
Using Cochise’s untimely death as motivation, and after the funeral, Preach runs off to pursue his dream of becoming a renowned Hollywood
