\t On Friday, internet and international calls were cut off across the West African nation in anticipation of the election results, according to locals and international observers in the capital, Conakry.

\t This was the third time that Conde matched-up against Diallo. Before the election, observers raised concerns that an electoral dispute could reignite ethnic tensions between Guinea's largest ethnic groups.

The Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria has painted a devastating picture of how COVID-19 and uninspiring government policy were destroying wheat production in Nigeria.

Alhaji Salim Mohammed, the national president of the Wheat Farmers Association in an extensive webinar conversation with Agriculture Journalists recently expressed anger and dismay towards government's attitude to wheat production and what it posits for the future.

The CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) is a very laudable programme created by President Muhammadu Buhari, but the wheat farmers' leader feels the string attached to the programme is a huge burden on the association and the farmers.

Assuming I received a loan of N250,000, I put it into farming and I get a profit of N20,000 or N30,000 or a maximum of N40,000 out of that production circle, how do you expect me as a farmer, to pay back that loan within the shortest possible time I have.

So there has to be good synergy between the operators at the centre and the farmers at the lower level so that we can have a round table meeting to understand what the major issues are and challenges facing agricultural production in the country,\" Salim said.

CAPTAINS of industry will gather in Harare next week to come up with solutions for challenges affecting the sector. BY BUSINESS REPORTER Preliminary projections indicate that the manufacturing sector will fall by 9,6% in 2020, largely because of reduced aggregate demand and a reduction in working hours caused by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Finance minister Mthuli Ncube, who will be the guest of honour at the industry indaba to be hosted by Global Renaissance Investment, said government was putting in place measures to resuscitate the economy. “The gradual reopening of the economy under an improving macroeconomic environment arising from fiscal and monetary reforms and enhanced availability of foreign currency from the foreign exchange auction system, should provide impetus for the sector to rebound by 6,5% in 2021,” he said. The Treasury boss noted that government was promoting value chains, which are a critical industrial development strategy as they advance inclusive growth, economic viability and sustainability for both business and beneficiary groups. “Government will, therefore, strengthen local agro-processing value chains in agriculture and mining through promoting local production and where possible, incentivising local private sector participation. “Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has created an opportunity for domesticating value chains, particularly in the manufacturing industry. “Through appropriate funding models, government will support small, medium and large enterprises that seek to exploit such opportunities. “With regards to agro-processing, the priority is on supporting various agro-value chains linked to agriculture output such as grains, horticulture, cash crops including tobacco, soya beans and cotton, dairy and livestock local production and processing,” he said. To facilitate the envisaged local manufacturing, the government is reviewing issuance of import licences and import duties on both imported raw materials and finished products, with a view of encouraging and incentivising local producers of agro inputs, as well as local manufacturers for local processing. Ncube said it was also crucial for local firms to learn from some subsectors such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals and petroleum, rubber, foodstuffs and ICT, as well as exporters that recorded positive gains this year notwithstanding the deadly coronavirus pandemic. Ngoni Dzirutwe, the GRI chief executive, said the event would also celebrate business survival in the COVID-19 era where most companies faltered. “This platform will afford business leaders an opportunity to energise and come back prepared in the new year to deal with these challenges and be ready to expand their businesses into the lucrative African market,” he said. South Africa’s ambassador to Zimbabwe Mphakama Mbete and his Rwandan counterpart James Musoni are expected to present papers on how the local industry can tap into regional markets. Other notable speakers for the event include Industry minister Sekai Nzenza, Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries president

Two police officers and a pilot from Sangre Grande gave away approximately 2,000 lbs of watermelon on Tuesday.

Shane Daniel, a police officer, has been attached to the crime scene investigation unit in the Eastern Division for 11 years.

When he leaves work he takes off his uniform and picks up a fork and trowel to go to his land in Vega de Oropouche to plant.

“It’s a lot of work.On my off days I go to the land. When I come home from a late shift, I go straight to the land.

\"It is a lot of work and a lot of sacrifice, but it is becoming necessary for someone to have a side hustle to achieve what I want to achieve.”

He, his cousin Kerry Emamdee – also a police officer – and brother Nicholas Daniel plant watermelons, cucumbers, peppers, corn and pimento. They rotate the different crops every time they plant.

A regular watermelon crop usually produces three harvests. They had already harvested and sold out the stock twice, so they decided to give the third away.

Daniel explained, “The last one I decided to donate to charity because a lot of people are strained.”

On Monday afternoon he posted on Facebook that he had 2,000 lbs of watermelon to give away. Each watermelon weighs approximately ten pounds, so he had more than 200 watermelons to give.

Daniel gave all away within an hour.

When he made the post, he was not expecting the reaction he got. Hundreds of people from all over the country, from as far as Gasparillo and St James, contacted him asking for melons.

“The people who I did reply to, a lot of them showed up by me. I don’t have a van to do deliveries.

\"In less than one hour, all were gone.

\"I tried to distribute it evenly and make sure individuals did not get too much.”

Roughly 25 people from the Sangre Grande area also came to collect melons. He gave some to three NGOs, five representatives of churches, and the Toco-Sangre Grande MP's office got some.

Daniel was blown away by the response, and wants to continue giving away his crops. For every harvest, he said he will give 25 per cent to people in need.

He also said every community should create some sort of agricultural programme where everyone can feed themselves.

“We need to be able to feed ourselves. If each community comes together and does something, even if it is teaching farming practices to the younger ones – something should be done before we starve here in the next few years.”

However, he understands donating may not be affordable for every farmer’s budget to donate.

“Sometimes when you plant you get 50 cents or $1 per lb. It’s a real big gamble.

\"Farmers would not be able to do it every time, it all depends on the market and what price you get. There are a lo

Luanda — The National Assembly (AN) passed last Friday, in general terms, the bills that approve the Property Code and the Motor Vehicles Tax Code.

When presenting the bill that approves the Property Tax Code, the minister of Finance, Vera Daves, said it is time to make a deeper adjustment, adapting the diploma to the country's social and economic reality.

According to the minister, this tax will constitute one of the main sources of financing for future municipal administrations, based on Law No. 13/20 (Law on Financing of Local Governments).

With this diploma, the Executive starts to tax unproductive agricultural land, in order to encourage those who hold them to exploit their properties (agricultural land plots) or give them up (rent them or through another type of contract that they may prefer) to those who have financial conditions, as well as make the property tax revenue act as a typical revenue source for local governments.

By proposing the diploma, the government intends to revoke the Road Tax and, instead, put an additional taxation on cars with longer usage times.
