THE Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance is today expected to seal the fate of a senior party official, Tendai Masotsha, accused of conniving with State security agents in the abduction of a Bulawayo-based journalism student ahead of the July 31 anti-corruption protests. By NQOBANI NDLOVU Masotsha was suspended as Bulawayo MDC Alliance women assembly’s chairperson after she was linked to the alleged abduction of Tawanda Muchehiwa, a journalism student. Muchehiwa, who is the nephew of ZimLive editor Mduduzi Mathuthu, was allegedly abducted in the city centre and held in captivity for three days, where he was severely tortured by armed men and later dumped at the family home after being linked to the planned protests. The MDC Alliance had initially promised to publicise the outcome of its internal investigations within 48 hours, but party secretary-general Chalton Hwende told Southern Eye that the report was only submitted to the party leadership this week for debate at the national council (NC) meeting today. “Investigations by the Bulawayo province have been completed. The province submitted their reports this week. Obviously, because of the nature of the allegations, the investigations took longer than expected, but we are glad that the investigations are complete,” Hwende said. “The report will be submitted to the NC and the report will be tabled there. The reason behind that is she is a senior member, and it is only that body that can discuss that matter and take appropriate action. “We understand people are anxious, but it is also necessary for us to afford Masotsha an opportunity to present her side of the story, and be properly treated in terms of the party constitution.” In his account, Muchehiwa said he received a call from Masotsha on July 30, the day he was abducted, asking for his assistance to distribute flyers to be used in the foiled July 31 protests. Muchehiwa said this led to his abduction as he believes it was a set-up, a charge Masotsha has denied. She claims the allegations were concocted to fight her along factional lines. Masotsha added that she was also kidnapped on the same day as Muchehiwa and later dumped close to her home the following day. guest column :Sandra Liebenberg THE coronavirus pandemic has killed over a million people globally and disrupted healthcare and political systems, economies, social bonds and religious practices. What can South Africa’s Bill of Rights and international human rights treaties contribute to coronavirus responses and recovery strategies in the country and globally? My central argument is that human rights provide tools to help States build fairer societies and economies. Such societies will be more resilient to future shocks. A human rights-based approach to the pandemic is based on values. It prioritises the most disadvantaged and vulnerable and it is holistic. It also highlights international assistance and cooperation. Value-based approach The values of human dignity, equality and freedom lie at the heart of human rights, and are the founding values of South Africa’s constitution. These values require the State and private actors to recognise that every life is equally valuable. Everyone should have the civil and political freedoms — and the economic, social and cultural means — to develop to their full potential. Governments can promote these values by acknowledging people’s agency. People should have meaningful opportunities to participate in response and recovery programmes. For example, a broad range of civil society bodies must get a chance to shape the budgetary decisions underlying economic recovery. The goal of all response measures should be to create an environment in which all can live in dignity without excessive inequalities on grounds of race, gender and socio-economic status. Setting priorities Human rights help governments set priorities in responding to the pandemic. People who are most disadvantaged and vulnerable should be the central focus. The pandemic and lockdowns have had the most severe impact on people living in poverty. In South Africa, that overwhelmingly means black people. Among them are people in overcrowded informal settlements without adequate water or the space to comply with social distance guidelines. Also harshly affected are workers in the informal sector, migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers. Many have not been able to access economic relief. Because traditional gender roles persist, women have had to bear the biggest burden of child care, home schooling and domestic work while trying to keep their jobs. Human rights require States to put the needs of such groups first when it comes to budgets, laws, policies and programmes. Economic reforms and other pandemic responses should be based on a systematic human rights impact assessment. Interdependence and accountability The third contribution of human rights is that they oblige governments to develop a holistic, integrated response to the pandemic. South Africa’s constitution and international human rights law recognise that all human rights — civil, political, economic, social, cultural and environmental — are interdependent and interrelated. BY DESMOND CHINGARANDE THE State security establishment is reportedly planning to track and attack perceived opponents of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime, with local and foreign-based journalists, ex-security officers, ex-Zanu PF and opposition politicians being targeted, a leaked security document has shown. The document, based on the minutes of a Joint Operations Command (JOC) meeting compiled on August 20 this year which was copied to directors of the Zimbabwe Military Intel Corps (MIC), Air Force of Zimbabwe Intelligent Corps, Police Intelligence and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZCPS) Intel, revealed names of individuals who were under constant surveillance for allegedly working against and sabotaging the government. The meeting was held on August 10 and security forces were put on high alert saying they must widen the arrests of all people leading online campaigns and to engage Interpol and Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation (Sarpcco) to locate those in the diaspora. Contacted for comment, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was not aware of the document. Three security personnel have since been reportedly nabbed for interrogation over their links to ex-security members turned anti-government campaigners. “I am not aware of that document. You can send it to me for confirmation,” Nyathi said. Even after receiving a copy of the document, Nyathi professed ignorance on the authenticity of the document. However, a top intelligence officer confirmed the minutes were authentic. “Yes,” the intelligence officer yesterday said, adding “our documents are encrypted when we are sending to each other.” The document read: “Following a JOC meeting on August 10, 2020 on the backdrop of ongoing incessant attacks on the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe … Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, the ruling party Zanu PF and the government of Zimbabwe by malcontents in Zimbabwe and in the diaspora who are working in cahoots with our erstwhile colonisers to destabilise Zimbabwe and pave way for an illegal regime change, it is hereby directed that all security services be on high alert and reinvigorate efforts to stop this growing anti-government campaign.” The minutes showed that the meeting resolved that all those who spread hate-speech and anti-government statements communicating violence by the government like ZimbabweanLivesMatter and ZanuPFMustGo hashtags should be tracked down and arrested, and that the “successful” arrests of journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and opposition Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume were part of the co-ordinated attacks on Mnangagwa’s perceived opponents. “This has reached a tipping point, therefore, those spearheading the campaigns should be tracked down, arrested and brought before the courts of justice. THE Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T party chairman Morgen Komichi yesterday unwittingly exposed that he was a spy who worked to destabilise and undermine MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.
Addressing a Press conference in Harare yesterday, Komichi said while he played an important role in jettisoning Chamisa into presidency of the party and presidential candidate in the 2018 elections, he never believed in his leadership qualities.
Komichi acted as Chamisa’s chief elections agent and rushed to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s podium to declare that the results that gave President Emmerson Mnangagwa a lead in the 2018 general elections were fake.
After ending his romance with the MDC Alliance in March following a Supreme Court order declaring Chamisa an illegitimate leader, Komichi made a volte-face and claimed that youthful leader did not win the controversial presidential poll.
But Chamisa yesterday said Komichi imposed himself on his election team.

One motivation was the fact that they also were Christians and wanted to make sure that they were not “preaching” one thing and living another — hypocrites. But it was more than that. They genuinely loved others and took literally the advice in Philippians 2:3, which states, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” They thought about how their actions would affect others and treated others the way they wanted to be treated. This has stuck with me combined with the fact the same Holy Spirit within them that motivated them towards selfless love now lives and convicts me in a similar way. In today’s article, I want to encourage you why this is so important in a world where corruption reigns and customer service can feel nearly nonexistent! Corruption is the very opposite of what I am advocating because the only way to knowingly buy someone off means you are choosing to not think of the implications your illegal actions have on someone else. If you get the tender because you know someone or you pay someone, that means the playing field is not level. You are choosing to elevate yourself over others who are just as worthy but now will not even be considered. You know you wouldn’t want someone to do that to you! Customer service stinks because people don’t care about the business. If they are tired, they will not get up and go that extra mile to make a customer want to buy and support that shop. Why would you do this? Because at the end of the month, you are going to get your paycheck regardless, so why put in the effort? TOP Zanu PF officials in Chikomba district, Mashonaland East province, have been exposed for allegedly demanding bribes from prospective candidates so they could influence the outcome of the party’s looming district co-ordinating committee (DCC) elections. By Miriam Mangwaya The alleged scam was exposed in an audio recording of a telephone conversation between Zanu PF councillor Lovemore Mufamba and DCC aspiring candidate Alfred Pedzisa, which has gone viral. In the six-minute long audio, Mufamba is heard naming three Zanu PF provincial members in Chivhu whom he claimed demanded US$300 from him so that they could disregard CVs for other aspirants. This, they said, would ensure that Mufamba gets a DCC post which was not disclosed in the audio. Mufamba also claimed that the three provincial members namely Moses Mataruse, Clifford Ngirazi and one Songore had the capacity to tamper with other candidates’ CVs and alter their contents in favour of a candidate who would have bribed them. “Each of the provincial members wants US$100, so I am busy looking for someone who can lend me $300 so that I give them and they consider my CV,” Mufamba allegedly said in the audio. “They told me they could access councillor Israel Dhikinya’s CV (chairperson for Chikomba (Rural District Council) and alter it to another less influential post. They can also do that to many other aspirants whom the leadership is not pleased with.” Pedzisa confirmed the authenticity of the recording, but declined to comment on the matter. “I am also an aspiring candidate in the DCC elections hence I cannot comment on the matter. You can get a comment from party leadership,” said Pedzisa who is eyeing the DCC chairmanship. Mufamba also confirmed to NewsDay Weekender that he was the one recorded talking to Pedzisa over the phone. 'I am not worried that the audio was leaked. This is election time, there is a lot of treachery, deceit and blackmailing but the truth always prevails,” Mufamba said. He, however, refused to comment on his fate in the party. Both Mataruse and Ngirazi dismissed claims that they were demanding bribes to influence poll outcomes. They referred questions to the party provincial chairperson Joel Biggie Matiza, who was not picking calls.

MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa has said the government is running scared of the people and it is time to boot President Emmerson Mnangagwa out of power.
Addressing the press on the sidelines of his lawyer, Thabani Mpofu’s initial court appearance, Chamisa said Mnangagwa had surpassed former President Robert Mugabe in dictatorship levels and should be ousted.
“And we will have to show Mr Mnangagwa the way that dictators are supposed to be shown, they have to exit the people’s spaces,” Chamisa said.
“The lawyer is in good spirits, he knows that in a dictatorship, when you are a lawyer, you are misconstrued to be an opponent of the state yet he is only doing his professional duty to represent those who are supposed to be represented,” said Chamisa.
The opposition leader, who is at the centre of a power struggle to control the heart and soul of the opposition said it was time for SADC, the African Union and international community to intervene in the internal politics of Harare.

He earned a spot as a senior member on the influential Ways and Means Committee and became a vocal advocate of U.S. trade with Brazil and Africa. BY MOSES MATENGA OPPOSITION MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa says Zimbabwe is going through its worst moment under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom he accuses of being determined to silence the people at all costs. Chamisa’s party says over 30 of its members were in hiding from State agents, while dozens are in detention on allegations of trying to topple Mnangagwa. “We are uncompromising, principled and relentless for real change. As a people, we have seen the worst of our times but we are getting over it soon. We are focused and on course,” Chamisa told NewsDay Weekender yesterday. “We have seen the worst because our people are homeless, no opportunities, no food, no business; politics is at its worst with extreme and advance human rights abuses.” He added: “Children are dying in hospitals, curable diseases are killing people. People are being beaten up every day and I am receiving reports that people are being pursued as if they are common criminals. There cannot be a free Zimbabwe when people can’t walk free, having State agents breaking into their homes. It cannot be a free Zimbabwe when belonging to an alternative party attracts detention and arrest.” Chamisa accused Zanu PF of institutionalised lying, denying the obvious and telling the world the opposite of what was happening on the ground. “They have been fighting us as the MDC Alliance. They are trying to take away the people’s party and its name, the people’s headquarters, the MPs, financial resources allocated to us on account of the voters. Anything they see they are taking away,” he said. “They want to take everything, but Zimbabwean lives matter. We are the way to the future, the only credible way forward. “It is not as if we don’t know what we are doing. What we don’t want is to play a game with predetermined results. We don’t want a question with a predetermined answer. No one fights a weak opponent. They are resorting to hair raising terror against citizens.”

Gweru Urban legislator Brian Dube (MDC Alliance) confirmed the development yesterday. “We applied to council and we were given the go-ahead to convert the Ivene Cocktail Bar into a standard modern clinic. This was necessitated by the compelling need to relocate the Ivene Clinic,” he said. “The current clinic was so small that staff and patients shared one single toilet. There was no medical storeroom and the treatment room was used for three purposes. It was the sister- in-charge’s office, treatment room and storeroom. There was also no TB boom and patients were served from the veranda.' The MP, who is also a lawyer and MDC Alliance deputy secretary for legal affairs, added that the old clinic posed a health hazard for residents as it was located at the heart of a residential area, a challenge that has since been resolved by the new project. “The old clinic was located within houses and not safe as disposals of used medical materials risked being accessed by kids,” the legislator said. “However, the location of the new clinic is at the far end of the neighbourhood, making it safer.” He added: “We have stand-alone rooms for TB, treatment, sister-in-charge, dispensary, drug and consultation as well as the clerk’s office.” “We now have a proper modern clinic. The vision is that, since there is still space, we will also develop further to have a maternity ward and day care rest wards.”

SENATOR representing people with disabilities Watson Khupe yesterday claimed that the country’s spirit medium Ambuya Nehanda was never hanged on a tree contrary to popular beliefs, but was executed in jail.
Khupe was contributing to a motion in Senate on abolition of the death penalty in Zimbabwe, where he came out against the proposal, saying that murderers and rapists should face the guillotine as they would have committed grievous crimes.
“There are many people that are raped or murdered and how do their relatives feel if the death penalty is abolished?
But he said that inasmuch as he was opposed to abolition of the death row, there was need to efficiently investigate murder crimes to ensure that innocent people are not convicted and end up being hanged.
However, the majority of senators opposed the death penalty, including Harare Metropolitan senator Morgan Femai (MDC Alliance), who turned up in the House together with Harare Metropolitan senator Elias Mudzuri and Midlands senator Morgen Komichi.
MDC Alliance co-vice presidents, Tendai Biti, and Karenyi Kore were Friday arrested at the party headquarters, Harvest House, now known as Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House.
MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere confirmed the arrests and said the army and police took over control of the building Thursday at 10 pm.
According to Mahere, the State security agents manhandled the MDC Alliance internal security took possession of the building without a court order.

Zanu PF acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa has told the MDC to blame its founding leader the late Morgan Tsvangirai for the chaos in the opposition party. BY MOSES MATENGA Tsvangirai appointed Nelson Chamisa as vice-president in 2016, leading to his eventual rise to lead the party, a move the Supreme Court ruled was illegal on March 30 this year. The court declared Thokozani Khupe the interim leader of the opposition and ordered her to organise an extraordinary congress within three months. This was despite Chamisa and Khupe contesting the 2018 elections under two different parties. The MDC Alliance, however, accuses Zanu PF of using state institutions to destabilise the opposition and to force Chamisa to legitimise Mnangagwa’s presidency. “Zanu PF has nothing to do with the squabbles within the MDC. The squabbles within the MDC emanate from lack of obedience to their own constitution. The late Tsvangirai tore up a constitution to appoint two illegal vice-presidents,” Chinamasa told NewsDay yesterday. “They created internal conflicts and Zanu PF has nothing to do with those internal conflicts. We have nothing to do with the demise and the split in the opposition. It will split because they are not democratic.” He added: “The MDC took each other to court, to the [second] highest court and the court pronounced that what the late Tsvangirai had done was illegal. So what is happening now is to correct and align the MDC to the rule of law. “They need to learn that there is rule of law. If you are aggrieved, you go to court and they did that without us. Zanu PF was not there when they went to court; Zanu PF was not there when Tsvangirai tore up the constitution.”
