Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.
Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.
In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.
Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.
Swollen feet
In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.
Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.
Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.
FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.
Two police officers and a pilot from Sangre Grande gave away approximately 2,000 lbs of watermelon on Tuesday.
Shane Daniel, a police officer, has been attached to the crime scene investigation unit in the Eastern Division for 11 years.
When he leaves work he takes off his uniform and picks up a fork and trowel to go to his land in Vega de Oropouche to plant.
“It’s a lot of work.On my off days I go to the land. When I come home from a late shift, I go straight to the land.
\"It is a lot of work and a lot of sacrifice, but it is becoming necessary for someone to have a side hustle to achieve what I want to achieve.”
He, his cousin Kerry Emamdee – also a police officer – and brother Nicholas Daniel plant watermelons, cucumbers, peppers, corn and pimento. They rotate the different crops every time they plant.
A regular watermelon crop usually produces three harvests. They had already harvested and sold out the stock twice, so they decided to give the third away.

Daniel explained, “The last one I decided to donate to charity because a lot of people are strained.”
On Monday afternoon he posted on Facebook that he had 2,000 lbs of watermelon to give away. Each watermelon weighs approximately ten pounds, so he had more than 200 watermelons to give.
Daniel gave all away within an hour.
When he made the post, he was not expecting the reaction he got. Hundreds of people from all over the country, from as far as Gasparillo and St James, contacted him asking for melons.
“The people who I did reply to, a lot of them showed up by me. I don’t have a van to do deliveries.
\"In less than one hour, all were gone.
\"I tried to distribute it evenly and make sure individuals did not get too much.”
Roughly 25 people from the Sangre Grande area also came to collect melons. He gave some to three NGOs, five representatives of churches, and the Toco-Sangre Grande MP's office got some.

Daniel was blown away by the response, and wants to continue giving away his crops. For every harvest, he said he will give 25 per cent to people in need.
He also said every community should create some sort of agricultural programme where everyone can feed themselves.
“We need to be able to feed ourselves. If each community comes together and does something, even if it is teaching farming practices to the younger ones – something should be done before we starve here in the next few years.”
However, he understands donating may not be affordable for every farmer’s budget to donate.
“Sometimes when you plant you get 50 cents or $1 per lb. It’s a real big gamble.

THE pandemic has brought horror stories for many, but for Mark Smith, it brought love and money from a place that he never explored.
Since the start of the pandemic, job losses have been constant as businesses adjusted their operations, some shutting their doors.
For Smith, his job loss was a wake-up call he needed to pursue an innate passion.
Sunday Newsday spoke with the 35-year-old father of two who turned a negative situation into a positive picture for him and his family.
“I worked at Hyatt; I was a server there for 13 years. In my department, our salary was based on service charge and tips so with the pandemic, the basic salary was next to nothing and then they retrenched us. When I got my settlement I took that money and invested in hydroponics and agriculture and grew kale.”
Kale, a member of the mustard family, is good for treating blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and is rich in antioxidants, calcium, vitamins C and K and rich in iron. Smith said his investment was a way to earn a living.
The Chaguanas man said he Googled hydroponics and growing kale while still employed. Last July he invested $4,000 and had one tower which produced about 48 kale plants. Then in February he was retrenched and with his $46,000 settlement he dove head first into agriculture.
Smith said he once had a passion for fashion design but after doing his research and getting into agriculture, that passion shifted. He said the pandemic made him refocus and that was a blessing in disguise.
“The pandemic opened up a passion that I didn’t know I had. I wasn’t into agriculture. My passion was fashion design. I like to design different suits and stuff, but with the pandemic, it is not making any money right now. So it just opened up my eyes so that if this is to happen, how many years again God forbid, I am in an industry where it will always be making money no matter what goes on because you have to eat. Since the pandemic, I haven’t bought a piece of clothes. I haven’t bought a suit but everyday you’re buying food so that’s the industry. I actually developed a love for it after.”
Smith was fortunate enough to own an acre of land and used it to plant sweet potatoes. He wants to expand his business and his wife, who still works at the hotel, is weighing the option of leaving a steady paycheck for the world of entrepreneurship. He joked that his wife is now referring to him as a \"farmer.\" He is not considering rearing livestock at the moment but the thought of raising chickens has crossed his mind.
“I invested in the hydroponic system. One tower holding 48 kale plants so that’s what I invested in. I invested in a tank, a pump and different stuff. I also have a system for lettuce. I had four towers at the beginning, and it was just kale. Right now I have sixteen towers of kale and just three for lettuce, I try to get 120 lettuce heads.”

The people – not just Black people – but a huge swath of America’s people – are fed up with America’s racism, spurred and nurtured by white supremacy which has given White people the false belief that they can do whatever they want forever.
The brutal and cruel murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer ignited a spark of resentment and frustration among Black people, but it also opened the eyes of many White people and people of other racial and ethnic groups.
If the economy was in danger before, it is in even more danger now, because more businesses have been adversely affected because of being burned down as this nation vents its frustration and anger at the way police have been able to denigrate and disrespect people for literally generations.
America is falling because of this president’s racism, his lack of leadership, and his inability to show empathy with the people he is leading or respect for the constitution he swore to uphold and protect.
