The Indian Ocean Tuna company has employed about 250 Seychellois workers in the past month, ensuring steady work during the COVID-19 economic crisis in Seychelles.

Mark Benoiton, the company's environment, health and safety manager, told reporters that the factory is looking for an additional 100 workers.

I have been here for 17 years and this is the first time that I have seen people queuing at the door to come and work at IOT.

Benoiton said that this year, IOT has slowly upped production as there has been an increase in demand from Europe.

\"There are two other factories in our group that have closed down at the moment due to COVID-19 and we need to cover for them so the demand is high,\" said Benoiton.

The ravaging Covid-19 pandemic has severely affected the world and football was not spared as the sport has been disrupted with lockdown restrictions employed almost everywhere to tame the situation.

As a way to help national football associations - including Rwanda football association - cope with the effects of the pandemic, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has mobilised a $10.8 million relief fund that will be extended to its members.

The decision was communicated during a video conference CAF meeting on Thursday, May 28, when the Emergency Committee approved the immediate distribution of financial grants to 54 affiliated member associations.

\"A total of $10.8 million will be offered to the 54 member associations on the continent as part of a relief plan to ease the financial burden on the African football community during these unprecedented times,\" reads part of the statement.

Across the continent, many football leagues were suspended or cancelled for the 2019-20 season, while some were prematurely ended and titles awarded to the leaders, which was also applied with Rwanda Premier League where APR were crowned champions last week.

Voters in Seychelles are starting to cast their ballots in the presidential and national assembly elections.

It comes at a crucial time for the nation of 115 islands off East Africa, Voters will decide if President Danny Faure will be elected for the first time after taking over from predecessor James Michel, who resigned.

His People's Party, which has been in power since 1977 also faces an unprecedented challenge

The vote will run across three days across the islands.

Faure is facing two rivals. The main one is Wavel Ramkalawan of the Linyon Democratik Seselwa (Seychelles Democratic Alliance) opposition party, the majority party in parliament after winning 19 of 34 seats in the last election.

He is an Anglican priest and has run for president six times

But the opposition parties have not managed to unite in this election.

The other candidate is Alain St Ange, who was in the opposition before joining the government tourism minister.

He is running for the One Seychelles party which he created a year ago.

The main concern for the voters is the economy, which has slowed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

About 700 people have lost their jobs, according to government figures. The idyllic islands famed for their white beaches are a hub for tourism, particularly with those on their honeymoon.

But the coronavirus pandemic has closed borders, hampering the key tourism industry.

Another key theme of the campaign has been corruption, a largely taboo topic in the tiny country where everyone knows everyone and business and politics are often intertwined.

The Seychelles is classed by Transparency International as being perceived as the least corrupt country in Africa and among the 30 least corrupt in the world.

However it is also a tax paradise housing numerous offshore companies.

Other countries scheduled to hold elections are Egypt, Guinea, Seychelles and Tanzania.

For countries that do hold elections, there may be special voting arrangements that can allow polls to go ahead but reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

In South Korea's elections in mid-April, the electoral commission encouraged people to vote before election day at any of the 3,500 polling stations throughout the country.

This not only decongested polling stations on election day but contributed to the highest turnout in the country for nearly 30 years.

This means that countries planning to hold elections in 2020 or early-2021 need to start discussing these arrangements - across party lines and among multiple relevant agencies - as soon as possible.

Addis Ababa — Statement co-signed by the ministers of finance and / or ministers of development of the following countries: Angola, Cameroun, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Namibia, Niger, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone and Tunisia.

The bilateral debt standstill is a first step, more will be needed

African finance ministers called for $100 billion fiscal stimuli, the IMF has already extended debt relief to the 17 low income countries on the continent, and through other mechanisms has disbursed over $US17 billion in emergency funding to countries to address the Covid-19 pandemic.

A solution to finance Africa's commercial debt service could free up over $44 billion of fiscal space for Africa in 2020, providing immediate liquidity to governments – a much needed immediate bridge to renewed growth for Africa and the global economy.

A third-round donation of medical supplies from the Jack Ma Foundation will help the Seychelles' Health Care Agency in its response plan in case of a second wave of COVID-19, a top official said on Friday.

He added that \"Jack Ma has also given us PPEs like masks, gloves, gowns and all of these will boost up our stock as part of our preparedness in the event of a second wave.\"

Seychelles, a group of 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean, received a two-tonne consignment of donations from the China-based Jack Ma Foundation on March 25 as part of humanitarian aid to help fight against the spread of the COVID-19.

The relief initiative was launched by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, the Jack Ma Foundation, and Alibaba Foundation as part of actions towards implementation of the Africa joint continental strategy for COVID-19.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Seychelles has also received donations of medical supplies from different organisations and countries including the UAE, the United States, India and China among others.

In its new report titled Out of the blue: The value of seagrasses to the environment and to people, launched on World Oceans Day on June 8, Unep blames these unsustainable activities for a deteriorating coastal ecosystem, a decline in coastal productivity, and affected certain supportive functions performed by the marine plant leading up to loss of critical fisheries habitat.

Seagrass ecosystems are biologically rich and highly productive, providing valuable nursery habitats to more than 20 per cent of the world's largest 25 fisheries and filtering pathogens, bacteria, and pollution out of seawater.

For example, it is estimated that seagrasses covering an area of seven square kilometres of Gazi Bay at the Diani-Chale Marine National Reserve, Kenya, comprise of a total carbon stock of 620,000 Mg, with a monetary value estimated at $19 million in regulated global climate at a global scale.

UNEP said new data suggest that seagrasses are among the least protected coastal habitats.

The Unep World Conservation Monitoring Centre, said it had found in its most recent census that an estimated seven percent of seagrass habitat is being lost worldwide each year.

There are now more than over 400,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the continent, with a number of African countries imposing a range of prevention and containment measures against the spread of the pandemic.

According to the latest data by the John Hopkins University and Africa Center for Disease Control on COVID-19 in Africa, the breakdown remains fluid as countries confirm cases as and when. As of May 13, every African country had recorded an infection, the last being Lesotho.

We shall keep updating this list largely sourced from the John Hopkins University tallies, Africa CDC and from official government data.
