In May, Burundi held a presidential election which was won by Evariste Ndayishimiye, candidate of the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy - Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) party.
Ndayishimiye was hurriedly sworn in after the untimely death of president Pierre Nkurunziza in June.
Rights violations continue
The Council encouraged donor countries which had suspended aid to Burundi to continue dialogue towards resumption of development assistance.
A report by a UN watchdog in September said human rights violations were still being committed in Burundi, including sexual violence and murder.
The country was plunged into a crisis in April 2015 when Ndayishimiye’s predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run for a controversial third term, which he ultimately won in July 2015.
His candidature, which was opposed by the opposition and civil society groups, resulted in a wave of protests, violence and even a failed coup in May 2015.
Hundreds of people were killed and over 300,000 fled to neighboring countries.

Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.
Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.
In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.
Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.
Swollen feet
In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.
Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.
Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.

BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA HARARE Mayor Jacob Mafume, who is being accused of parcelling out residential stands, has been granted $30 000 bail by High Court Judge Justice Benjamin Chikowero. Mafume appealed to the High Court after he was denied bail by magistrate Bianca Makwande who said he was likely to interfere with witnesses in the matter. But Justice Chikowero ruled out that Makwande had misdirected herself by denying Mafume bail. He was ordered not interfere with witnesses, to surrender his passport and to continue residing at his given residential address, as part of his bail conditions. It is alleged that Mafume allocated residential stands to his sister Rotina Mafume and secretary at his law firm Rutendo Muvuti without following due process. The State alleges that in March this year Mafume allegedly called housing director Admore Nhekairo asking him to allocate stands to Rotina and Muvuti but the council had closed interviews for home seekers. But Mafume allegedelly used his influenced responsible council employees to allocate the stands to the two. Military sales by the arms industry’s 25 largest companies totaled US$ 361 billion in 2019, 8.5 per cent more than in 2018, according to a new study released Tuesday by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
The top five positions are occupied by US defence giants. Together with seven other US companies, they represent 61 per cent of global sales.
After the USA, China accounted for the second largest share of 2019 arms sales by the top 25 arms companies, at 16 percent. The six West European companies together accounted for 18 percent.
The two Russian companies in the ranking accounted for 3.9 percent.
For the first time, a Middle East company has become a top arms supplier in the world.
Edge, based in the United Arab Emirates, occupies the 22nd position, and accounts for 1.3 percent of total arms sales of the top 25 firms.

The Ethiopian government has confirmed that soldiers shot at a United Nations team which was driving in the north of the country where the army has been fighting Tigrayan forces. A spokesman blamed the UN staff saying they were not supposed to be in the area. He accused them of driving straight through two check points before they were detained. A Hero in the USA Passes Away
Brigadier General Charles ``Chuck'' Yeager, the World War fighter pilot ace and quintessential test pilot from the USA who is believed by some to be the first to have flown a plane faster than sound in 1947, passed away Monday at the age of 97 — as per a tweet posted by his wife on his Twitter account. Born February 23, 1923, in a small town in the hills of West Virginia, the award-decorated pilot flew planes for over 60 years.
Yeager enlisted in the Army Air Corps after graduating from high school in 1941 and went on to fly numerous fighter planes in both world wars to later kick off his career as a test pilot at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

Others that came after him were prevented from fulfiling their reams not for lack the appropriate education or training — but for the colour of their skin.

The First To Do It?
On October 14, 1947, the then a 24-year-old captain Yeager, pushed an orange, bullet-shaped Bell X-1 rocket plane past 1062 km to break the sound barrier — a daunting aviation milestone at the time. Apparently, Yeager's feat was kept top secret for about a year with the Western world believing the British to have broken the sound barrier first.
Sixty-five years later to the minute, on October 14, 2012, Yeager commemorated the feat, flying in the back seat of an F-15 Eagle as it broke the sound barrier at more than 9,144 meters above California's Mojave Desert.
