South Africa is one of the hardest-hit countries in Africa with over 740,000 infections.
The country recorded 60 more virus-related deaths on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 20,011.
According to a new study conducted by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, immunity to the Covid-19 infection lingers for at least five months, possibly longer. The new report released Wednesday shows 90% of people who were mildly or moderately ill from Covid-19 infections keep a stable antibody response that is strong enough […]
[Capital FM] Nairobi -- As Kenya prepares to open its skies up to international passengers on August 1st, the Ministry of Health has said that the selection of countries whose passengers are allowed in is not based on diplomatic relations.
The Jamaican Government is reconsidering the imposition of COVID-19 pretesting of arriving tourists as the coronavirus response architecture at the island’s airports has been overwhelmed by passenger traffic, Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Christopher Tufton admitted on Sunday.
The people (medical personnel) are burnt out and stretched while the equipment goes on down time,” Tufton said in response to queries that some visitors complained of waiting for up to 11 days before receiving their test results.
The health and wellness minister said that a more targeted approach was needed and that the Government might reopen the door to the pretesting of visitors, a recommendation made by the Medical Association of Jamaica.
“The PM (prime minister) presents a flow chart via video which indicates that visitors must stay in their hotels until their results arrive, but the airport medical personnel, we understand, are telling visitors to stay in their rooms until the results arrive,” one hotelier, who requested anonymity, said.
“That can take up to eight days, as was the case with some of my guests who arrived in Jamaica on June 21st, and when they were leaving on the 28th, they had still not received their result,” one hotel operator said.

The Covid-19 pandemic has come as the last nail on the coffin of Kenya’s oil export dream as currently structured after British oil major Tullow Oil served the government with a force majeure notice, which means that it can no longer deliver its part of the contract.
On Friday, Africa Oil Corp revealed to its shareholders in Canada that its partner here, Tullow Oil Kenya, had submitted notices of force majeure to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining on Friday on behalf of the joint venture partners in the Turkana oil blocks.
The firm said it hopes the operating environment, adversely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, to improve and the potential outcome of discussions between Africa Oil, its partners and government of Kenya.
The Asian giant has emerged as the potential partner that will help Kenya realise its oil dream after key players - Tullow Oil Plc and Total SA - started the process of selling part of their stakes in oil discoveries in Kenya.
Currently, Tullow has a 50 per cent stake in the project, with Canadian firm Africa Oil holding 25, and French firm Total SA holding the other 25 per cent.

The Trump presidency has been three-and-a-half years of pure outrage. Though political observers frequently discuss the importance of Fox News and Breitbart News to the success of this administration, the President's real platform is the rest of the media.
His playbook draws directly on the legacy of Newt Gingrich, a former congressman from Georgia who entered the House of Representatives in 1979 and rose to the speakership in 1995 until before falling from power in 1998. Long before he was speaker of the house, Gingrich understood that sensationalism and provocative language played well in front of the cameras. In an era when the number of news outlets was expanding as a result of cable television, Gingrich understood that politicians could influence the national conversation by providing fodder to journalists who sought dramatic stories.
Gingrich spent a good deal of his time offering sizzle as a way to get his message out. He delivered short speeches on C-SPAN in 1984 blasting Democrats for being weak on defense and asking them to respond. Since viewers couldn't see that the chamber was empty at the end of the day, it looked as if his \"silent\" political opponents were guilty. When the incident blew up after House Speaker Tip O'Neill had the person controlling the cameras pan the empty chamber to reveal the trick, Gingrich was delighted because the country's largest networks -- CBS, NBC and ABC -- and major papers covered the story -- and him.
\"The number one fact about the news media,\" he said, was their love of confrontation. \"When you give them confrontations, you get attention.\" In 1990, Gingrich's organization GOPAC distributed a memo that taught Republicans how to \"speak like Newt\" -- emphasizing the need to describe their opponents as \"sick,\" \"traitors\" and \"radicals.\"
Like Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s, Gingrich also understood that the press would report on allegations, the accusations would stick, and rebuttals wouldn't get as much attention. This was especially true as the accelerating speed of the news cycle greatly increased with the spread of cable television in the 1980s. Gingrich learned that the press would investigate something because he pronounced it to be true and this was enough to cause the damage he sought. Unlike McCarthy, who was pushed aside in 1954, Republicans made Gingrich their leader (House minority whip in 1989 and speaker in 1995).
With all the talk about the importance of conservative media outlets, President Trump's 2016 strategy rested on these principles. He capitalized on his ability to garner constant attention from powerful media organizations -- which ended up providing him the amount of free airtime that most candidates only dream of -- and distracting reporters to focus on stories that were of interest to him. He was always throwing a new shiny object for reporters to obsess about. During the contentious Republican primary, he had the media debating the nicknames he gave others and \"pants on fire\" (according to Politifact) accusat
(Barbados Nation) After 17 days with no new COVID-19 cases, four people who returned to Barbados on Tuesday’s repatriation flight from the United States tested positive for the viral illness.
Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic made the announcement earlier yesterday during a media briefing at his Culloden Road, St Michael, office.
The public health officers in this Ministry are fully aware and have been advising the Government that we should be prepared for an uptick in cases once travel from hotbed areas resumed,” Bostic said.
“I wish to assure the public that Barbados is much better prepared today to deal with this challenge than we were in March when the viral illness surfaced here on island.
Bostic said the Best-Dos Santos Public Health laboratory conducted 187 tests on Tuesday and the others were negative.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has denied that it plans to resume passenger flight operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
This comes a day after an internal memo by JKIA Airport Manager Abel Godo to officials from the Aeronautical Operational Control (AOC), all government agencies, concessionaires, contractors, suppliers and service providers about the imminent resumption of passenger flights for a meeting leaked.
\"In preparation of the imminent resumption of passenger operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you are hereby invited to a virtual meeting to be held on Wednesday 13th May 2020 at 11.00hrs,\" read the memo.
She clarified that the meeting, which has since been postponed, was meant to put in place measures in case the flight operations resume.
Moi International Airport Manager Paul Wafula confirmed that they do routine meetings internally to brainstorm on the measures to put in place just in case the travel ban is lifted.
“In preparation of the imminent resumption of passenger operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you are hereby invited to a virtual meeting to be held on Wednesday 13th May 2020 at 11.00hrs,” read the memo.

Brides Across America has been gifting wedding dresses and even weddings to members of the military and first responders for more than 10 years. But in May, the Massachusetts-based organization launched an initiative to expand its reach to health care workers.
\"When the pandemic started, we noticed all the doctors and nurses and other health care workers giving up so much of their time to support our communities so we wanted to include them in our mission,\" founder Heidi Janson told CNN.
So far, the group has given wedding dresses to more than 150 health care workers on the front lines of the pandemic.
Nicole Harris, one of the recipients, is a registered nurse at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She has been working with Covid-19 patients since March. On Friday, Harris attended an event with Brides Across America to choose her wedding dress.
\"Working during the Covid-19 pandemic has been a roller coaster of emotions, but I am grateful that I was able to make a difference in my patients' lives, much like Brides Across America made a difference in mine,\" Harris, 26, told CNN.
While other brides-to-be excitedly plan their dream weddings, Harris has spent long hours in hospital rooms caring for patients and doing her best not to contract the virus herself. It's left her with little time to prepare for the big day next August.
Harris described planning a wedding while responding to the pandemic as physically and mentally exhausting.
\"The stress of the pandemic has added to the stress of planning a wedding in that lots of places are restricted hours and vendors are not operating as normal. This free wedding dress has helped out tremendously as now I can use the money towards other aspects of the wedding.\"
Brides Across America hosts fitting events throughout the United States. Health care workers attend with rings on their fingers and -- after lots of laughs and even some tears -- leave with gowns on their arms.
Janson said it's her organization's way of giving back.
\"To be able to give back to them in such an intimate way, especially since weddings are moments people dream about, is just a beautiful experience,\" Janson said. \"This is just to show them that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. It's a timeless moment for them to remember forever.\"
Since its founding in 2008, Brides Across America has gifted 26,000 wedding gowns and 24 weddings.
