The fascinating rites of Sambia people where boys drink semen of older men to become warriors

A war- like tribe, the society has sharply delineated roles of men and women and the very fact of men being born of women is cause to undergo the blood initiation supervised by the men’s secret society to even be considered a potential suitor by the women.

But of all these, the contentious parts of the initiation are the sexual rites, which involves boys sucking on the manhoods of elderly men and then have others perform fellatio on them with the understanding that ‘jurungdu,’ concentrated in semen is needed by the boys in order to mature.

The following six initiations take place over time where the boys are isolated from women.

The fifth stage of initiation now takes place about the time of his wife’s menarche.

The sixth stage of initiation bestows the full rights of manhood and takes place after the man has proven that he has achieved masculinity by having a child, and preferable two.
