In 1934 under the late Rev. Samuel L. Laviscount, St. Mark Congregational Church established the first social service agency for children and youth in upper Roxbury. This center pioneered in youth development - 'getting the boys off the street,' said the Reverend Laviscount. The St. Mark Social Center operated until the early 1960s, when the building was demolished as a result of urban renewal.
