Women Stand Up, Pandemic Stand Down!
Kampala, Uganda is serving a healthy dose of Girl Power amid a covid-19 pandemic that sees several women — who found themselves in months-long lockdown and unemployed, take on both new careers and self-defence training by way of Diva Taxi, a new female taxi driver service in the city. Company founder, Gillian Kobusingye, is proud of her employees, \"Our ladies are extremely hard working, very motivated and I like their sense of pride when they are doing this work they are doing it with one heart compared to other people. And that's the difference we have to the competitors.\"
Diva Taxi now boasts over 70 drivers and claims an industry-low fare commission rate of 25% in order to see the women thrive.
Donna Ochen, a Diva Taxi driver, is happy with the means the professional opportunity financially affords her, \"When I saw the Diva Taxi company reaching out to all females who could be interested I decided to take it up because it would be an opportunity for me to serve and earn and support my family with the earnings that I'd get from driving.\"
Filling a Much-Needed Void in the Industry
Diva Taxi has a fleet of around 100 cars that serve as taxis, special school pick-ups and drop-offs and even functions like weddings. An unexpected and resounding successful start for the company that almost wasn't. Rebecca Makyeli, the manager and self-defence trainer at Diva Taxi, shares the very early days of the company's journey, \"They thought of the idea of why would we have our cars just parked in a compound and yet we can transport people and services from one place to another. So, coming up with this idea it started off as a joke, supported by friends, close friends and family, but eventually, the idea picked up and in June 2020 the company was registered and officially came into being.\"
With its 72 drivers averaging 30 rides a week, Diva Taxi expects its service app — downloaded around 500 times to reach 2000 active users this year in the city of three million inhabitants.

BY FORTUNE MBELE ZIFA are yet to issue communication on player transfers since the game was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March. The Premier Soccer League was on Friday granted permission to resume activities by the government under stringent COVID-19 conditions. Zifa has not bothered to spell out how expiring and expired contracts are to be handled as guided by Fifa when the association had earlier indicated football could resume in September/October. There has not been an official position on amendment to transfer windows, which is likely to prejudice both players and clubs, with some big clubs already having taken the matter into their own hands. In July, the Premier Soccer League wrote to its 18 clubs advising there would be no player movements since Zifa had not issued an official position and that they had engaged with the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe to come up with a win-win situation. After days of trying to get answers from Zifa regarding the matter, the national football governing body's communications manager Xolisani Gwesela on Friday finally said the association was still consulting. 'We are still consulting our stakeholders on that issue. We will come up with a position in due course,' Gwesela said. Highlanders had two of their key players Brian Banda and Tinashe Makanda's contracts expire in June and the Bulawayo giants have been paying their salaries and the two players recently received their COVID-19 relief allowances from the club. Banda has since moved to FC Platinum and has started group training with the club, which is hopeful of registering him for their Caf Champions League campaign. Makanda reportedly signed with Dynamos recently but the player has since denied that he put pen to paper with the Glamour Boys. Highlanders chairman Kenneth Mhlophe stated that the club had taken a professional stance and has been waiting for Zifa to communicate through the PSL on how the issue of player contracts was to be handled. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck and football activities were suspended globally in March Fifa categorically stated in a proposal that: '…contracts be extended until such time that the season does actually end. This should be in line with the original intention of the parties when the contract was signed and should also preserve sporting integrity and stability.' In Zimbabwe, football had not started but Fifa further stated that: 'A similar principle applies to contracts due to begin when the new season starts, meaning the entry into force of such contracts is delayed until the next season actually does start.' Clubs have players who signed one year contracts at the beginning of the year and we are already two months before year end without any football activity. Fifa also made it clear on the issue of transfer windows. 'With regard to transfer windows, again, it is necessary to adjust the normal regulatory position to the new factual circumstances. Former Burundian President Pierre Buyoya, who is the current High Representative of the African Union for Mali and the Sahel, \"rejected\" Wednesday his conviction in absentia in Burundi to life imprisonment for the murder of his predecessor Melchior Ndadaye in 1993.
\"We reject these judgements, which can in no way commit us,\" a statement from him signed by co-defendants says.
\"Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the new government has just proved to the world that it follows this line of lawlessness,\" they said.
Melchior Ndadaye, Burundi's first democratically elected president and the first Hutu to come to power, was assassinated in October 1993 in a military coup that would lead the country into a civil war between the army, dominated by the Tutsi minority, and Hutu rebel groups. It will result in 300,000 deaths until 2006.
Mr. Ndadaye had succeeded Mr. Buyoya, carried by the army in power in 1987 and who became president again in a new coup between 1996 and 2003, before handing over power to Domitien Ndayizeye, a Hutu, under a peace agreement signed in 2000 in Arusha (Tanzania).
Mr. Buyoya was convicted of \"attack against the head of state, attack against the authority of the state and attack tending to bring about massacre and devastation\", according to the text which only contains the operative part (conviction and sentence) of the decision handed down by the Supreme Court.
The name of Pierre Buyoya had already been cited in connection with this assassination, without the beginning of any proof being provided.
Eighteen senior military and civilian officials close to the former head of state were sentenced to the same sentence, three others to 20 years in prison for \"complicity\" in the same crimes and only one, the former transitional Prime Minister, Antoine Nduwayo, was acquitted.
Only five defendants, four retired Tutsi high-ranking officers and a serving police general, Ildephonse Mushwabure, were present at the trial.
According to Mr. Buyoya, the trial was conducted \"in violation of the Arusha Accords\" and was neither \"fair\" nor \"equitable\" as the rights of the defence were allegedly violated.

Over the past six months, the lakes of Kenya's Rift Valley have risen to levels not seen in at least half a century.
This follows one of the wettest periods in East Africa in living memory. Above-average temperatures in the Indian Ocean have caused consecutive years of extreme and erratic rainfall, resulting in frequent and unusual showers on the slopes and rivers that feed the lakes
\"In my 60 years, I have never seen or experienced anything like this,\" said Richard Lichan Lekuterer, his gaze level with the tops of once-towering acacia trees poking above the water, the landscape altered beyond recognition.
Baringo and the other great lakes of Kenya's Rift Valley have risen to levels not seen in at least half a century, some by several metres or more this year alone, following months of extreme rainfall scientists have linked to a changing climate.
These tremendous bodies of water have ebbed and flowed through the ages, supporting life along the banks, but records show this latest surge is unlike any witnessed in recent memory.
\"It was like the speed of the wind,\" said Lekuterer, who relocated deep inland when the water shot up in March and is preparing to move again as the tide inches nearer.
The phenomenon is causing immense flooding along a chain of fresh and saltwater lakes stretching 500 kilometres (310 miles) along an ancient fault from the deserts of Turkana in Kenya's north, to the fertile shores of Naivasha to the south.
Tens of thousands of people have been driven to higher ground and homes, grazing land and businesses abandoned as the lakes have unrelentingly pushed outward.
- 'Phenomenal' -
The crisis shows no sign of easing, with seasonal rains forecast this month threatening further inundation.
\"It has never been this bad before,\" said Murray Roberts, who has lived on Baringo nearly 70 years, where he restores degraded land with his partner Dr Elizabeth Meyerhoff through their Rehabilitation of Arid Environments Trust.
Baringo has swollen about 70 square kilometres (27 square miles) since 2011 but rose sharply earlier this year, flooding their offices and a nearby dispensary.
Roberts' childhood home, and a family holiday business, disappeared beneath the surface.
Like Baringo, the surge at Lake Naivasha, some 200 kilometres south, began slowly about a decade ago, evoking little concern as the basin refilled after a long dry spell.
But it kept rising and in April suddenly accelerated, soon eclipsing the last historic high measured in the 1960s. The lake is now tracking closer to an extreme peak recorded in the early 20th century.
A monitoring station run by the Water Resources Authority (WRA), a government agency, indicates the lake rose 2.7 metres (8.9 feet) between April and June, pushing water half a kilometre inland.
\"It's been phenomenal,\" said Guy Erskine, as hippos wallowed in his submerged hotel at Sanctuary Farm, a conservancy on Lake Naivasha his family has owned since 1978.
