Quaker Oats announced that they will be changing the name of the popular Aunt Jemima brand in an effort to combat racial stereotypes.
The over 130-year-old brand’s origin comes from a song called, “Old Aunt Jemima” from a minstrel show performer.
Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Quaker Foods North America Kristin Kroepfl addressed the issue.
“We recognize Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype,” she said in a press release.
This is not the first time that Quaker has made changes to the brand.
