Peter Mponda trashes league title talk

CELEBRATING WITH CAUTION—Bullets players

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Coach Peter Mponda has said it is too early to start talking about his team winning the TNM Super League title.

Bullets are currently at the summit of the table on goal difference with six points from two matches.

They cruised to the top after a 4-1 thrashing of Creck Sporting at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Wednesday.

The People’s Team made a big statement in the opening match of the season, beating defending champions Silver Strikers 1-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe some two weeks ago.

However, when asked about winning the league title following the back-to-back wins, Mponda said it was too early to start drawing conclusions.

“Winning two games does not guarantee us the title. Our target is, indeed, to win the league title but, look, we have just played two games and there is no way we can be saying that we are the favourites. We need to plan well for this to happen.

“I am sure that the match against Songwe [Border] United on Sunday will give us a true picture of what to expect this season. That is all I can say for now. I do not think we should start talking about winning the league title right now,” he said.

Bullets were a changed side against Creck on Wednesday following the coming in of midfielder Mike Mkwate and striker Babatunde Adepoju.

The two were on the bench when the Lilongwe-based side held Bullets to a goalless stalemate in an Airtel Top 8 first leg match at the same venue.

Goals from Adepoju, Wongani Lungu, Chikumbutso Salima and Yamikani Mologeni were enough for Bullets to seal the emphatic win and collect the much-needed three points over Creck who got their consolation goal through Kondwani Chilembwe.

The visitors have had a terrible start to their 2025 campaign with no point in their opening two matches.

They have conceded eight goals against two, after also allowing Dedza Dynamos to hammer them 4-1 in their first match of the season.

Action in the elite league resumes tomorrow with an all-soldiers affair between Mafco and Kamuzu Barracks at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota District.

In Sunday’s matches, Blue Eagles will take on Creck at Nankhaka while Bullets will host rookies Songwe.

Creck, Songwe, Tigers and Civil Service United are yet to win their first match of the season.
