Editor’s Note: The Sentinel sports staff is putting together a summer series looking at the legacies of the most influential African-American athletes in history. Today: Monte Irvin. This column originally published four years ago when Irvin died in 2016.When I heard Monte Irvin had died, I was a little heartbroken. When I read the Associated Press obituary that shared the news across the country Tuesday, I was devastated. Not because one of my heroes had passed, though that was sad enough.
