Kurt L. Schmoke

Kurt L. Schmoke is the President of the University of Baltimore. Prior to his current role, Schmoke’s commitment to public service led him to focus on increasing Howard University’s bar passage rate where he served as the law school’s dean and to expand its clinical law program to emphasize environmental justice, fair housing and civil rights.

Schmoke served three terms as the Mayor of Baltimore from 1987 until 1999. Schmoke is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and served as a former member of President Jimmy Carter’s domestic policy staff. President George H.W. Bush awarded Schmoke the National Literacy Award for his efforts to promote adult literacy.
