Jurist Mifflin Gibbs born

Arkansas jurist Mifflin Wistar Gibbs was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gibbs became the nation's first African American judge in 1873. From 1850-1858, he served as U.S. consul to Madagascar.
