In 1942, John H. Johnson published the "Negro Digest," the first magazine devoted to summarizing and excerpting articles and news about blacks published in mainstream publications. Immediately successful, the magazine laid the foundation for Johnson Publishing Company's success, which was only increased by magazines like "Ebony" and "Jet." "Negro Digest," published from 1942 through 1976, became "Black World" in 1970.
