Indian-origin global leaders | Nagaland Post

Two old men are presently hoping for a rematch in the November 2024 US presidential election – incumbent US president Joe Biden (81) of the Democratic Party and the other the former US president Donald Trump (78) of the Republican Party. However, Biden’s sliding approval rating at 38% nationwide is the biggest threat to his re-election in 2024. Also as many people in the survey said the 80-year-old Biden was “old” and “confused”, and a similar number saw his 78-year-old likely challenger, Donald Trump, as “corrupt” and “dishonest.” Trump is under three separate indictments and currently awaiting a fourth as the 2024 election draws near. He is also facing several civil suits including one led by New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, who alleged that Trump committed business fraud. In the event Joe Biden is unable to carry on till 2024 due to failing mental health or that he somehow gets re-elected and eventually has to step down on mental health ground, his vice president Kamala Harris would become the next president. However, Harris has been least impressive as vice president with 40% registered voters favouring her while 54% having unfavourable opinion. Amid the Biden mental health issue and Trump’s criminal cases, vice president Kamala Harris was expected to eventually become the frontrunner if Trump ran for re-election in view of his high rating among Republican voters. However everything changed in weeks after the Republic primary debate. Presently former US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley is ahead of all candidates. She is the only Republican presidential aspirant who could defeat Joe Biden. Though Kamala Harris has been described as Indian-origin, she is half Indian. She is the first African-American and first Asian-American vice president. Harris is the daughter of Donald J.Harris a Jamaican-American of Irish ancestry and Shyamala Gopalan,a Tamil Indian biologist. On the other hand, Nikki Haley or Nimrata Randhawa, is cent percent of Indian-origin. She is the daughter of Sikh immigrants-Dr. Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa- who moved to the states from the Amritsar District of Punjab, India. In 1996, Nikki married Michael Haley and they have two children. Haley seems to have an edge over white voters with college degrees- about 51 per cent of the group said they would vote for her, while 49 per cent or less said they would vote for other Republican candidates. Haley, 51, has a six percentage-point lead over Biden, 81, in a CNN/SSRS poll released on September 7- with the Biden trailing her 49% to 43%. She is the only Republican candidate to dispatch Biden above the poll’s 3.5-point margin of error. In her message to the American voters, Haley has also pressed for increased scrutiny on aging politicians, saying elderly officials across the country should be required to their mental acuity. During her campaign launch, she also called for new political leadership, saying, “We won’t win the fight for the 21st century if we keep trusting politicians from the 20th century”. If Haley is elected as US
