BY FIDELITY MHLANGA ZIMBABWE’S gold deliveries declined to 3,97 tonnes during the first three months of 2021 from 5,72 tonnes during the comparable period last year after heavy rains swamped shafts and kept artisanal miners from work for prolonged periods. Following years of protracted droughts, Zimbabwe has just had a good rainfall which has resulted in a bumper crop harvest. Artisanal miners, estimated at about 1,5 million in Zimbabwe, have been producing over half of the country’s annual gold output after a two-decade economic crisis triggered the closure of most big operators. Big miners have been slowly reclaiming their position over the past two years, but slight disturbances to the operations of artisanal miners still result in falling national output. Formal miners have faced several operational challenges including late payment for gold delivered to Fidelity Printers and Refiners (FPR). Foreign currency retention thresholds imposed by the central bank have also affected mining operations. Figures from FPR showed that large-scale miners, also referred to as primary producers, delivered 2,99 tonnes with small-scale miners coming in with 1,58 tonnes during the period. FPR’s report came as Caledonia Mining Corporation announced on Monday that output at its flagship Blanket Mine was slightly subdued at 13 197 ounces during the period due to heavy rainfall and lost shifts. Caledomia said it was on track to achieve a production guidance of between 61 000 and 67 000 ounces for the full year, before scaling up output to 80 000 ounces by 2022. “Production in the first quarter of 2021 was slightly below our target and below the comparable quarter in 2020 albeit at a level which allows us to maintain our 2021 production guidance of 61 000 to 67 000 ounces for the full year,” Caledonia chief executive officer Steve Curtis said. Economist Tafadzwa Chisango agreed with Caledonia, saying heavy rains had hampered operations. “Given that most of the gold is produced by small-scale miners it was inevitable that there was going to be a decline in this year’s first quarter output, largely necessitated by heavy rains the country received in the quarter in question,” Chisango said. “This, to a greater extent affected mining activities for artisanal and other small-scale gold mining operations as most do not have high end drainage machines to drain water from shafts. “But addressing issues such as payments and continued extension of gold support schemes like the one that was unveiled by the central bank recently remain key in bolstering output in the remaining quarters,” Chisango said. He projected that gold output would increase in the remaining quarters. Another analyst, Victor Bhoroma said: “Delays in payments are yet to be solved. “This leads to high levels of smuggling to markets such as South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. “Gold worth at least US$100 million per month is leaving the country through illegal channels. “I foresee gold production falling below 15 tonnes in 2021 if the exchange rate and payment delay issu

By LISA MARIE PANE and MICHAEL KUNZELMAN Associated Press BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Voting rights advocates and state officials are on high alert over fears that U.S. polling stations could attract the same strain of partisan violence and civil unrest that erupted on American streets this year, fueled by a deadly pandemic, outrage over police brutality and one of the most contentious elections ever. Anti-government extremists and other armed civilians have flocked to protests against racial injustice and COVID-19 lockdowns. Paramilitary group members are accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan's governor before the election. President Donald Trump encouraged one far-right […]

By Associated Press Undefined MADRID (AP) — Prime Minster Pedro Sánchez appealed Friday for Spaniards to pull together and defeat the new coronavirus, warning: “The situation is serious.” Sánchez, in a televised address to the nation, acknowledged public fatigue with restrictions to contain the spread of COVID-19. But he added: 'We have to step up the fight,' with more limits on people's movement that will demand more sacrifices. Spain this week became the first European country to surpass 1 million officially recorded COVID-19 cases. Sánchez admitted, though, that the true figure could be more than 3 million, due to gaps in […]

By DEB RIECHMANN and MATTHEW LEE Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump announced Friday that Sudan will start to normalize ties with Israel, making it the third Arab state to do so as part of U.S.-brokered deals in the run-up to Election Day. The deal, which would deepen Sudan's engagement with the West, follows Trump's conditional agreement this week to remove the North African nation from the list of state sponsors of terrorism if it pays compensation to American victims of terror attacks. It also delivers a foreign policy achievement for Trump just days before the U.S. election […]

Sudan has decided to normalize its relations with Israel under US mediation,
The normalization of relations between the 2 countries was announced Friday by the White House in Washington.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described this a \"tremendous turnaround,\"
\"What a tremendous turnaround! Today Khartoum says yes to peace with Israel, yes to the recognition of Israel and normalization with Israel,\" Netanyahu said in a statement in Hebrew transmitted.
Sudan thus becomes the third Arab country to announce since August the normalization of its relations with Israel, after the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, welcomed Mr. Netanyahu who had met earlier this year with Sudanese General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Uganda.
The normalization with Sudan is particularly symbolic. After the Six-Day War, which in 1967 saw Israel seize the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, most Arab leaders met in Sudan to adopt the Khartoum Resolution known for its \"three no's\": no peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, no negotiations with the Jewish state.

Earlier this year, when the coronavirus pandemic was at its height, I was concerned not only for our nation’s physical health but our nation’s financial health as well. The incredible economy that President Trump had created pre-coronavirus had been artificially disrupted, and the entire situation seemed generally uncertain. Of course, our news cycle didn’t make it much better, as the […]

The Associated Press undefined WASHINGTON (AP) — WHAT ARE THE RULES AROUND POLL WATCHING ON ELECTION DAY IN THE UNITED STATES? President Donald Trump has been urging his supporters to go the polls and 'watch very carefully,' raising concerns about possible voter intimidation. Monitoring the votes at polling places is allowed in most states, but rules vary and it's not a free-for-all. States have established rules, in part, to avoid any hint that observers will harass or intimidate voters. There is a long history of whites intimidating and preventing Blacks from voting in the South. And the Republican Party had […]
