The autobiographical book, From “N Word” to Mister Mayor: Experiencing the American Dream is a compelling journey of Otis Samuel Johnson, Ph.D. It is the story of an African American male born in 1942 in midst of Jim Crow. It is an example of his generation’s struggle in Jim Crow schools, fighting to end segregation in the 1960s and continuing struggling for justice and equity into the 21st century. After a career in academia and the non-profit sector Dr. Johnson became the 64th Mayor of the City of his hometown, Savannah, Georgia and served from 2004 to 2011. Dr. Johnson chronicles a lifetime of work constantly challenging racism and injustice at the local, state and national levels. He uses the idea of ‘The American Dream’ to show how difficult it is for African Americans to experience that ideal journey because of racism.
