Adverts for The Blackening, a new horror film in cinemas this week, use the ingenious tagline: “‘We can’t all die first.” It refers to the infamous Hollywood horror trope whereby, if a Black character is introduced, you know they’re going to get it in the neck before anyone else. But in The Blackening, all the central characters are Black, a group of old college friends who have rented a cabin in the woods to celebrate Juneteenth, a federal holiday marking the end of slavery.
