The District plans to move the remaining 56 homeless families from the Quality Inn motel on New York Avenue by mid-July, according to the D.C. Department of Human Services.

The move comes as the city takes steps to end its relationship with the Northeast motel that has been used the past five years as overflow housing for the homeless.

The end of the relationship with Quality Inn is part of the city's plan to phase out the use of motels as overflow shelters by the end of 2020.

Once the Quality Inn is vacated, the city will have families housed at just one motel — the Days Inn, also on New York Avenue NE, the Washington City Paper reported.

The District has long used city motels as emergency overflow shelters for families without homes, reportedly spending roughly $3,000 per month to house a single family.
