WASHINGTON, DC, United States (CMC) - Two new reports have found that the novel coronavirus pandemic-related school closures risk pushing an additional 72 million primary school-aged children, including those in the Caribbean, into 'learning poverty', meaning that they will be unable to read and understand a simple text by age 10.
Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.
The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.
The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.
Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

President Donald Trump signalled Sudan would be removed from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism if it pays compensation of $335 million to American terror victims and their families.
The move would open the door for Sudan to receive much needed international loans and aid to revive its battered economy.
Sudan has been listed since 1993 when al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden lived in the country as a guest of the government.
The compensation relates to the victims of the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, attacks conducted by Bin Laden’s al-Qaida network while he was living in Sudan which killed more than 200 people.
Trump made the announcement on Twitter.
Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who took office last year, welcomed the announcement, also on Twitter.
The move could also help Sudan's transition to democracy. Last year a popular uprising led to the military overthrow of autocratic leader Omar al-Bashir.
A military-civilian government now rules the country with elections possible in late 2022.
The announcement, just two weeks ahead of the U.S. presidential election, also comes as the Trump administration works to get other Arab countries, such as Sudan, to join the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain’s recent recognition of Israel.

BY JAIROS SAUNYAMA The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has hailed government for adopting the Pfumvudza agricultural concept saying it would go a long way in ensuring food security at household level. Pfumvudza is a government agricultural programme that relies on conservation methods. Speaking during a virtual meeting in commemoration of the World Food Day held on Friday, assistant FAO programming officer David Mfote said his organisation was excited to collaborate with government in promoting the latest agricultural concept. “Through the livelihoods food security programme we are collaborating with the Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement ministry to promote the Pfumvudza concept and we are quite excited because the ministry has taken it to an upper scale, which is a climate smart conservation and agricultural technique that aims to improve household food security through ensuring cereal adequacy for the whole year,” Mfote said. In a bid to alleviate hunger, government has unveiled the Pfumvudza agricultural concepts that are meant to ensure food provision at household level. The concept involves traditional farming methods that are meant to curb climate change effects at the same time improving yields mainly in the rural areas. The concept has been widely received by communal farmers with government complementing with agricultural inputs as well as expertise. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that about 7,7 million people in the country will be food insecure by year end. In her speech on the same day, WFP country director Francesca Erdelmann said there was need to consider technology and innovation in the agricultural sector to improve yields. “Given the intensity of food insecurity in Zimbabwe, anticipatory action is critical. New tools such as forecast-based financing and climate risk insurance have an important role in building robust and stable food systems in Zimbabwe.” Erdelmann added: “For example, under the Africa risk capacity initiative, a recent drought payout of US$290 000 will support selected communities during the forthcoming lean season. We can benefit from joining such regional and global efforts. “Further, the use of digital technology offers opportunities to communicate climate information and suitable farming advice to and between farmers, share market prices for better business decisions, and offer online learning tools for self-learning and enhancing skills and capacities.” The World Food Day is commemorated across over 150 countries with this year’s theme being Grow, Nourish, Sustain, Together. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, a day after the vote, Diallo said he had emerged \"victorious\" despite \"anomalies which marred the ballot\".
\"I invite all my fellow citizens who love peace and justice to stay vigilant and committed to defend this democratic victory,\" he said.
Soon after, his supporters chanted \"president\", despite no official result being published and the electoral body saying his claim was \"void\".
\"It is a great joy, we are proud that our president has been elected. All the people of Guinea are behind him,\" said Fatoumata Bineta Diallo, member of the UFDG executive board.
\"It was many citizens, outraged by the misgovernance, who joined us to give the final victory. We are very proud of him.\"
\"I think that the Ceni (electoral body) will only publish the results coming out of the ballot boxes... and the results coming out of the ballot boxes will give Cellou Dalein Diallo victory,\" said Amadou Diallo, UFDG activist.

guest column:Tadiwa Pasipanodya THIS article serves as a brief synopsis of the mining that was taking place in one of Zimbabwe’s protected areas namely Hwange National Park. The article will start with an in-depth analysis of the laws that regulate the mining industry in Zimbabwe and then proceed to discuss the current unenviable situation which has seen mining take place in a national park. It will then conclude on a sombre note as it discusses the conflict between environmental conservation and the need to stimulate economic growth, moreso in a situation where there is a desperate need to achieve the latter. What law regulates mining in Zimbabwe and what are the procedures contained in the law? The main piece of legislation that regulates mining in Zimbabwe is the Mines and Minerals Act (hereafter referred to as the Act). The first aspect one would note when perusing through it, would be that in section 2, the Act vests the right to mine in the President of course subject to the Act. Although this is not the main purpose of this piece, it would be worth noting how more progressive jurisdictions have handled this key introductory section. For instance, in South Africa the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) enlists the State as the custodian of mineral resources for the benefit of all South Africans. That is a notable distinction which will be explored on another day. For one to start mining in Zimbabwe, the following procedures must be satisfied. The process naturally starts with a prospecting licence. In the Hwange National Park instance, the Chinese-owned company by the name Yuxian County Zhingxin Coking Company Ltd (hereafter referred to as the Chinese company) which was working in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC), was supposed to be in possession of a Zimbabwe Investment Authority certificate. Then in turn apply for a prospecting licence from the Mines ministry or any of its offices as prescribed by section 20 of the Act. Section 23 of the Act further provides that the prospecting licence will be valid for a period of two years and gives the holder the latitude of prospecting and pegging mining claims anywhere in Zimbabwe subject to certain limitations. At this point, the holder of the prospecting licence can go on to physically peg the area the prospector is interested in as prescribed by section 27 of the Act. However, this should happen after delivering prospecting notices to the land owner. There is a caveat, however, provided in section 31, namely that certain areas are not open to prospecting which, therefore, means they cannot be pegged. Such areas include dams and cultivated dip tanks. Once the requirements prescribed in the Act have been satisfied, individuals interested in mining can then move to apply for registration at the Mines and Mining Development ministry offices and the following must be attached: Prospecting licences, prospecting notice, discovery notice, notification of intention to prospect to the land owner, a map in triplicate to the
