En août 2017, le Venezuela était au cœur de la plus grande vague de protestations de son histoire récente, avec un record de 100 jours consécutifs de rassemblements. À l’époque, et parallèlement à des actes de répression brutaux de la part du régime vénézuélien de Nicolás Maduro (avec plus de 100 manifestants tués cette année-là lors de leur confrontation avec les forces de sécurité), il existait une conviction nationale selon laquelle les jeunes du pays ne rentreraient pas chez eux tant que la démocratie ne serait pas rétablie.
